Grants like there baffle me. Having worked for the university, it is a lot about how you phrase the proposal so you can get the approvers to issue the grant. Someone had suggested ya-snippet and it already solves many of their goals. I am skeptical about the auto-correct feature

I thought this would be a perfect article for testing our some summarize tools :). According to the osx summarizer tool, the following came up when I set to 1 sentence:

This is fantastic. It is annoying to come across papers that are incredibly hard to read, but convey very little.

I can imagine what the author feels - "I did all this work and people are complaining about the colors!" :)

The comments about the colors are valid.

I once worked on a fairly complicated hardware (video encoder) that took over a year to develop, and during an important demo, the most comments I got was something about color of one of the LEDs. It was annoying to hear those comments back then, but it has made me wiser about looks being an important aspect of a product. Aesthetics are important (at least for others :)).

Amazing. I just spent $440 on a king futon mattress. Nice execution. Furniture has the similar issues to the mattress industry. Expensive, and cheap quality. So many dining tables in a furniture store, but just 1 in 10 did not wobble. (yes assembly could be an issue, but mechanically not a sound design in my opinion)

I showed this site to 3 different people and asked them: "How much do you think the product costs?". They all said $149.

No where does it say on the main page that it actually costs $295. I found this in the blog at the end of a post: "For $295 and no monthly fees you can order a Lockitron deadbolt kit that can be installed in about 15 minutes".

The above statement was part of an answer to "What is Lockitron?". I would have thought that this is the most common FAQ, but it does not exist on the first page.

Left a sour taste and am disappointed. Though nothing illegal, certainly deceptive.

Tools like Z and autojump are fantastic timesavers.

Newegg used to be awesome - I have spent thousands in the last 6 years with them, but their customer service is terrible. Their customer service pretty much reads a script and keep repeating the same thing.

I think all companies have a life cycle: 1. New company, so customer is treated well/ 2. Company grows and becomes successful 3. Company needs to show ever increasing profits. Starts taking shortcuts to save money, and starts to ignore what made them great in the first place.

I listened to the follow up piece by Ira Glass.. It seems that Mike D. has done the same thing to someone else's autobiography (i.e twisted the truth) and went back to the "theater" claim when he was caught.

I am no psychologist, but listening to his 'apology' gave me a strong sense that he was playacting a role of someone who sought forgiveness. He had these dramatic pauses that seemed forced, and was dancing around technicalities. I don't think this is the last time someone is duped by him.

Facebook will likely benefit a lot more.. They had a crappy forum, and they can let the rest of the folks actually do their support work I think :)

Well, come to think of it, I think google's support forums suck even more. You can post a problem on google support forums, and pray and hope for an answer from their developers.

It is also possible that no matter how the opening price was, people were going to gobble it up anyways.

Like others pointed out, the price slowly grew from $25, $35 and finally $45. I had placed a limit buy order for $47, and it opened at $85.

If there are any finance folks here, I have a question - who set the $85 price? Was it the underwriters? It could not have been the market because the stock started trading at $85. Also, I could not get any stock data from any of the sites (NYSE, yahoo, google, ameritrade etc) untill past 10:15am EST or so. Is this delay normal for IPOs?

I actually like the big letter design because I think it emulates minimalism. If you have big letters, you have to avoid putting other crap on the page, and it gets you to focus on the one message (as opposed to a bunch of other things on the page)

The beginning of the conversation sounds like an intro to a Nigerian 419 scam. I was waiting for "can you transfer some money from my brother" or something :). Not to mention the fact that I might be booted out if customers feel uncomfortable.

I noticed that counts show up sometime, and sometimes it doesn't. Since this is not consistent behavior, I assumed this is a bug.

I am a ex-blackberry user and now have an android phone. The nay sayers were predicting the demise of the blackberry (er.. including me), but looks like that is not anytime too soon. Good for RIM.

I think you'd agree that parents will feel differently about the level of censorship. I specifically set my setting to "Use strict filtering" which google clarifies by saying "Filter both explicit text and explicit images". An innocent search phrase like "i love to eat" now suggests that you select some other search terms. I myself have been coerced to a different search phrase because of google instant, so I think children are the same way - saves them from typing.

I agree with you about responsible parenting (which also differs from person to person). It is for this reason, I select "strict filtering". The explicit texts in that result certainly have not been filtered. I guarantee that if google finds out about this, they will change this result.

As some one pointed out in the comments, everyone is different. Sure, college may be broken, but I certainly don't regret going to college. I then went to grad school (for ECE) and now I am in school for an MPA (nonprofit studies).

I do not think Peter Thiel is encouraging people to crap on colleges. It all boils down to an individual - people going to college and those that don't - both can make a difference.

As much as I admire entrepreneurs, facebook and myspace do not solve pressing problems (disease, hunger etc). Sure, we admire the founders because they made it, but money is not the end all. I'd be scared to live in a world full of entrepreneurs :).

This is sad. I use delicious daily, and I actually use it as a search engine - The ones that are most bookmarked is usually what I am looking for.

Another advantage is that I can share links form multiple machines.

I went mountain biking a few months ago and the maps were hand drawn on a piece of paper. It was embarrassing when I got lost.
