But do you? You really only need to restart the processes using those packages. Technically, a kernel update (specifically security update, bug fixes may not be important) would only require a reboot.

While I understand what you're implying, you need to realize people depend on these devices. If they didn't exist, yes, people would find other ways (as they have in the past).

I find myself very good at picking up small examples of code. I think the real challenge in programming isn't learning how if statements, loops, arrays, etc. work but how to put them together to do what you want. This is the real challenge and I believe this is a combination of self-teaching (maybe experiences) and natural ability.

#7. Though this example may be hold true, I don't always relate corporate promotions to being 'good' at something. One thing that I've definitely learning is the people you know (your 'visibility') is as important (maybe more) than what you know.

This is the market at it's best. I've heard from many times that Google's salaries aren't competitive but rely on the "you will change the world" mentality. Google pulls in the talent and Facebook gets to cherry pick.

I would like to say nothing but I know some authors won't want to be included without the magazine being free in some form. I'm afraid this will jeopardize the quality of the articles and reduce overall readership. How about making the electronic (only) version free (again) and giving author credit/promotion.

I also have instant overload but I must admit, this is one of the better instant apps I've seen! And no begging for a job. :)

Yes! Writing something significant is a great way to learn a language. I have also learned a great deal from solving the Euler Project problems. Either way, just get your hands dirty!
