Anecdotally I started getting more on board with this movement from the increased information on urban planning from Youtube channels like Not Just Bikes & City Beautiful. I personally never conceived of walkability, having lived in car-centric suburbia my entire life. I now live in a walkable area and can confirm that, for me, my quality of life has improved.
Abe Flips has amazing tutorials showing you different nudging techniques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeRcCbNNTeU
Joined a pinball league last year after moving cities. Not only did I fall in love with pinball(didn't grow up with any machines in my hometown) its just a phenomenal community of people who get together each week. I highly recommend anyone reading this to look for any pinball leagues in your area. Its a mixture of all sorts of people from my experience and just a wonderful social/gaming environment.
There's lots of things that happen in the wild that us humans shouldn't use as a moral compass. Also eating them involves causing these great creatures mass amounts of pain and suffering before they die. It's best to just leave them alone and let them live their lives in peace.
I love this quote by Ira though I believe the article linked and this quote aren't really discussing the same thing but certainly have overlapping themes.
I used to have a very large stride and was always known as a fast walker. Started having hip/back pain and reassessed how I move entirely and realized my long strides meant my hip and lower back shifted dramatically with each step to give my leg extra reach. Got minimalist shoes to where I don't heel strike as significantly and its reduced my stride length quite a bit thus removing that excess rotation in my hip and lower back
I like to remind myself that the society that we live in is/was created by people generally no smarter than you or I. People accept things as if a higher power is imposing their will against them to fit into these mental and physical constraints but once you start questioning the status quo, it feels very freeing.
for me, I take showers at night close to bed time. The last thing I want to experience is a cold shock to my system at that time of day. I can see it being useful in the morning though
vomit emjoi + anything else is pretty hilarious
If this post gets #1 I expect to see results titled "Results from being #1 on HN about being #1 on HN"
I have a date/time bug that I really dont feel like figuring out right now
I was royally confused because I thought 'billboards' was some alt tech jargon I wasn't familiar with in relation to geography. But no, literally billboards, go figure. I haven't seen one yet but thats pretty cool
Came here to say this basically. If a project only has surface level interest, I'll never finish it. The only projects I've ever finished are ones that I found that would be legitimately useful for me or other people. It has to solve a problem that, like you said, is meaningful.
I wonder how long they've been waiting to use that phrase for an article
I might be living under a rock, but what is IPTV? Even a Google search on it makes me scratch my head. I use Netflix, Hulu, etc but those have always been referred to as 'Streaming Services' , are those somehow categorized in the IPTV umbrella?
In the video at the bottom of that link, what is inside of that rubber balloon that causes it to become firm once air is (presumably) removed?
Im in the same boat, I find the concepts very fascinating but almost all of it is trying to solve problems that don't even exist for me.
The only thing my friends with IoT devices do are party tricks on voice command with their smart lights. Other than that, I find the so called 'problems' these devices solving are extraordinarily trivial.
How brilliant. It's a shame the post didn't get any traction at the time
I try and do this but end up usually just working through tutorials each day rather than making something. I suppose its a balance. I've been thinking of making little tutorial videos of me making little dinky web apps, I probably just need to put the tutorials on hold and start making.
Exactly, you can do a lot of amazing things with less money than certain things sell for. Most people spend that premium because the time required to build X for cheaper isn't worth it in the long run. (unless, like you said, its apart of someones interest or hobby)
There was a 60 Minutes episode with Fatal1ty that I saw when I was in high school and it showed him playing sports and exercising to make sure his reactions were sharp. I was competing in Counter Strike when I saw this and started regularly running and doing my best to eat healthy based off that episode. It definitely helped I think, we got pretty far along the CAL ladder during those days. It's cool to see these teams taking physical fitness even more seriously, I think it will have positive reflections on E-Sports in the long run.
It's a new audience that these games attract, not necessarily the way gaming is heading. Everyone has a gaming device in their pocket now where as 10 years ago only people who sought out gaming would play games.
