How are they supposed to assimilate if they have to leave the country to apply?

This has frustratingly low information density for a technical writeup. The LLM output on the marketing page is whatever, but here it really feels like my time isn’t being respected.

The Pokémon card mania in particular is deeply weird to me. I play Magic at a local card shop a few times a month and it’s always full of people playing Magic, D&D, or various board games. I don’t think I’ve seen a single person playing the Pokémon card game. So who’s buying the valuable singles? What’s keeping the market afloat? It’s bizarre.

The user base is the problem on Bluesky, at least for me. It’s full of well-meaning middle-aged people who don’t understand online discussion etiquette. Any non-political post that gets any sort of traction will get filled up with irrelevant bot-like (but real, as far as I can tell) political meme replies that barely make sense.

I maintain an RSS reader for work and Cloudflare is the bane of my existence. Tons of feeds will stop working at random and there’s nothing we can do about it except for individually contacting website owners and asking them to add an exception for their feed URL.

It was. In the last year it’s become largely conservative, and not in a standard reasonable small-government, etc. way. It’s like reading Facebook posts from your dumbest uncle.

What part of Canada? I live in the Seattle area and visited Vancouver for the first time recently, and Vancouver was much visibly worse than Seattle in terms of open drug use and general sketchiness. Obviously there’s a lot of potential selection bias there in terms of what neighborhoods I visited there vs where I spend time in Seattle. But I was still surprised at how bad it was.

“Inadequate” depends a lot on what you’re doing. I wouldn’t use any of this stuff in a datacenter but for a small business or branch office it’s totally fine.

Yeah, this is _the_ reason I started using Kagi. The default results aren’t significantly better than Google/Bing/DDG, but being able to block and boost domains is a killer feature.

Police, particularly in big cities, seem weirdly disinterested in doing their jobs. More recently I’ve seen people blame this on polarizing issues like protests or progressive DAs, but it’s been going on for longer than that. I honestly don’t know what the causes or solutions are.

Exactly this. I use other people’s blueprints for balancers because I find those complicated and not particularly interesting, but for everything else I’ve deliberately avoided looking at other designs. Creating something mediocre and inefficient and then inventing better ways to do it is half the fun.

I also highly recommend playing with a non-engineer friend. It’s an interesting way to watch someone gradually develop an intuition for abstractions and service-oriented design.

This is really sad. NXT-G was my first programming language. Not sure if I’d be the same person I am today without that experience.

Words have meanings. If you call something “full self-driving” you can’t get upset when people assume it means full self-driving.

You’re giving TX way too much credit here. Most of what they were selling was GPL-violating rebranded Atmosphere code with piracy tools preinstalled. They were screwing over the open-source hacker community and Nintendo at the same time. They probably don’t deserve a prison sentence this harsh, but I’m not particularly sympathetic toward them.

The article touches on this a bit, but I do think lumping straight up disorders like depression together with more “neurodiverse” ones like ASD is the wrong approach. Maybe other people feel differently, but for me personally I think there’s a pretty clear difference. If I could take a magic pill that permanently cured my depression/anxiety/ADHD, I would. But my feelings toward autism are a lot more complicated. Despite making my life more difficult in some ways, it feels much more a part of who I am than the other conditions. If it suddenly disappeared it would completely change my personality and way of thinking, to the degree that I basically wouldn’t be the same person anymore.

I ran into the opposite situation a few weeks ago. I was wondering why my allergies were so much worse on the weekends, and eventually narrowed it down to me only taking my ADHD meds on weekdays.

I’ve heard stories like this from everyone I’ve ever talked to about property crime, whether it’s in a big city or a small one. Police don’t really care about it. I’ve had friends with stolen phones who know exactly where they are because of Find My iPhone, and the police wouldn’t do anything. This has been true for years, long before anyone was talking about police defunding.

You’re underestimating how long the tunnel is, how many vehicles are waiting to go through, and how unwilling to follow rules people are. When I was waiting to drive through it last summer some guy decided he was tired of waiting and tried to drive around the line and into oncoming traffic. The railroad police had to chase after him and stop him before he shut the whole tunnel down.

I’m not trying to be obtuse but I genuinely don’t understand what the difference between the terms ”full self-driving” and “autonomous driving” are. They’re synonymous to me, and I have to imagine they are to the average person.

Calling it “full self-driving” is promoting it as being autonomous, regardless of what the disclaimers say. If it’s not capable of that, they should call it something else.

I tried this, but had the opposite problem. With push notifications turned off, I constantly feel the urge to check the app to see if there’s anything new. With them turned on it’s easier to ignore the app unless someone actually messages me.

They do, I had a clearance rejected because the examiner was convinced I had previous involvement in drug manufacturing. I don’t. I’ve never even used them. Hell, I barely drink. I ended up getting a much better non-clearance job offer elsewhere so it didn’t ultimately negatively affect my career, but it’s still irritating.
