I am finding an interest in this subject as well. Just wondered if you (or any reading) had any good book recommendations about the age of sail. I seen one of the Spanish first ship of the line's flags and the scale was incredible. Plenty of stuff going on in the UK as well, but I'd like to visit Netherlands and Spain's museums too. Hopefully we both make the trip some day to learn more.

The way I answer this question is, I don't because my boss is saying to basically accept whatever LLMs spit out which is fine by me because I have explained the risks of doing this to our only product and it was shrugged off. I am both disgusted and excused and just take the salary.

My boss is injecting hopium. He barely sleeps compiling massive massive documents which don't answer anything. We literally have a "(LILR Design Language)" spec which when you keep slicing through it, doesn't actually say anything.

It takes 70 seconds to full scroll through it with the fast scroll mechanism, but the whole thing boils down to "basically if it looks good then its good".

And even worse, he is asking for access to the codebase of the product since "I can do 90% of what we need and all the devs need to do is review the PR".

You were never an engineer. I'm 18 years into my career on the web and games and I was never an engineer. It's blind people leading blind people and your somewhere in the middle based on 2013 patterns you got to this point on and 2024 advancements called "Vibe Coding" and you get paid $$ to make it work.

Building a bridge from steel that lasts 100 years and carries real living people in the tens or hundreds of thousands per day without failing under massive weather spikes is engineering.

It's not that. They changed recently to 100% zoom. It used to be much more fine. Zoom in a little, Zoom out a little. For the past week, it's been max zoom in either direction. Kinda annoying.

I am really struggling with this. I tried Cline with both OpenAI and Claude to very weird results. Often burning through credits to get no where or just running out of context. I just got Cursor for a try so can't say anything on that yet.

I worked as a Nailgun operative in a Palette factory for a few dollars with people shooting nails at eachother for fun. I seen turtleshell.com one day and at the time I was like woah.

Flash was my route out of garbage and I miss it on behalf of younger people. I remember making a circle and keyframes. Attaching bits of code to frames to make it do what I want. Remember living at my moms house in the bath reading Flash Math Creativity or Colin Moock's books. I spent so so long understanding the concept of an Object or a Class or functions that call functions.

I feel that if I went back today, I'd be assaulted by package managers, dependencies, build systems, frameworks. No easy and beautiful way to draw a circle that weekend and animate it to an oval.

It is a real loss.

Stuff moves on and I am a developer, but my interest in motion (Penner! Keith Peters!) gave me a real solid feeling of what feels good with interactivity and motion and sometimes I open that ticket but it is rare. Everything is just the same now and I solve the same problems many of you do over and over again. It's boring. No creativity, no inspiration.

You would just change the machine that the human uses. If a task is too difficult and hence needs a human yesterday, and if there is a solution that a humanoid robot can now do today then you would simply get rid of all of the humanoid robotics surrounding the core problem. Even if that means bolting the humanoid to the floor just to use that single part you need.

That is unfortunate. Mine is 2am and it has been that way for 3 decades. It is a pain in the ass because I only sleep well at the weekend but then my mornings are gone and family give no end of grief about being lazy.

I agree with that entirely. Using the current tools available to make your life easier while picking up a decent pay check is a no brainer. I probably expect my next job is using said tools primarily followed by complete redundancy.

By that point, having never used any of the tools makes you almost no different from anyone off the street.

In a way I welcome it. Writing the same menial code as everyone else slightly differently becomes a pretty stale existence.

I am pretty happy with Angular. Can't believe it has been 8 years but as we continue to update the codebase, yes there is fatigue, but when you integrate a VSCode extension with git, many of the lines we update are many years old and often come down to improvements.

I think what is often neglected is that it is about the architecture. 8 years ago, React didn't even have Typescript Declarations and even if it did, how many times did you refactor your state management and each component as a result?

Before Angular, many companies (outside of the major players) were just eval() and doing absolutely outrageous inheritance chains with crazy levels of JQuery dependencies and mismanagement.

As someone who made a choice in a 3 man team 8 years ago and having scaled the product to 58 developers. We are all fairly happy with our small bugbears.

Should we progress to another framework, we hope for the genuinely valuable opinionated way of doing things that has allowed us to grow as we have.

That makes sense to me I think! In things going back as far as command and conquer, mousewheel up zooms in, and mousewheel down zooms out.
