By leaving out scale or prior models they are effectively manipulating improvement. If from 3 to 4 it was from 10 to 80, and from 4 to 4o it was 80 to 82, leaving out 3 would let us see a steep line instead of steep decrease of growth.

Light is the opposite of hard (ie hard close). It makes more sense (to me!) to use explicit vs implicit close? Clicking outside the popover means an implicit close.

I used a lot of solvers in the early 2000s in my Operations Research master after my econometrics study. While now working on software (web) that uses python I’m thrilled to see these deep dives on this subject!

I love the subject and reading this brought back a lot of memories. Also the realization that translating constraints to a model (variables, structure etc) is 90% of the work and the most difficult part.

I’m following /r/stripe and there are more horror stories over there. If you read carefully and between the lines it is often pretty logical that a ban/freeze is given (shady business, 35k per day within a week, etc)

The good thing is that Stripe is also monitoring that subreddit. And they often reply and mention heretohelp@stripe.com as a quick and easy way to get someone to speak to you. Maybe you can try that next time?

How do you get you data? Are you using APIs?

I’ve built a small scale ‘flat’ that is meant to act as a ‘living’ object that is a bed side companion for sick children that are lying in a hospital.

The idea is that you give a certain floor to family or friends so that they can control the lights (and color). The child can see if parents, grandparents or friends are home or not (based on a schedule or manual action). It gives a sense of reassurance and closeness of the relatives. Also very fun to see a living object next to your bed.

The hardware is a Atom Lite from M5Stack (see: https://shop.m5stack.com/products/atom-lite-esp32-developmen...) and a led stripe with addressable leds.

The software on the atom is micropython and the neopixel module. It connects to a webapp (through wifi) and listens to a JSON endpoint that gives the states of the leds (aka floors).

The webapp is a django app with a main user for the flat and he or she can invite others to control certain floors. All mobile friendly (no native app).

We have 4 live and deployed flats and are in the process of making more for our local hospitals.

The flat (wood) is custom made and pretty labour intensive.

A very fun project and learned a lot about hardware (and the deployment) coming from a saas background.

My first reaction was: ha, funny and a nice way to leverage your power as an IT person. Kind of revenge of the nerds towards the ‘suits’.

But then I realized that IT abused their power and lied to the suits which is outright wrong. At the end of the day you’re in IT and the suits are in charge. Don’t like that? Find another job or grab a position that gets you this power.

The problem is: you don’t always oversee the consequences of your roque actions. In this case the stakes were low, but where do you draw the line? If I were a suit and found out that you deliberately throttled the connection to force us in a decision I would be furious. That is simply not your call.

A couple of comments here are touching on the fact that being a doctor is hard in terms of that the profession is very difficult (IQ-wise), competitive and challenging.

I tend to disagree. There is a very strong halo effect which I just kind of ‘hate’. Let me explain.

Here in the Netherlands we have a numerus fixus (about 500 spots each year on each university). Getting in is part luck and part skill. The skill required is to show eagerness and motivation in an interview with a commitee. That’s the hard part.

Once in, you are very unlikely to drop out. The drop out rates are extremely low compared to other studies. The education is very long and intense: this is very needed, you need to be highly trained.

If you compare the academic level to other studies, it’s quite moderate. Basically, it’s a very pratical education with a lot of “hands on” in 6-8 years (and more if you specialize). For the dutch: people jokingly say that we need to rebrand the education to HBO-G.

I have a friend who started out in Economics, finished the study with a degree with honours and decided to follow his dream to become a doctor. He said: the education was so easy compared to economics, it was a total joke. Mind you: the level of education for doctor is very good in the NL compared to othet countries.

Now, in the NL we have a quite good health care system and still the doctors make an extremely good living. I have friends who are 40- and live in an 1 million+ house, drive a porsche and do luxury vacations three times a year.

And I think it’s fine: you are highly trained, you work shit and long hours and have an very very big responsibility.

But is it a difficult and challenging job? I disagree, you are a highly trained production employee doing 95% on experience because you did this a 1000+ times before.

The elephant in the room is, with the rising care costs here in NL, is this still viable? Earning high 6 figures while the system is under pressure? Also: why is the gap between doctors and nurses so big? Is that fair?

Plural is defined as the Noun plus an S, but is configurable in Django.

Nice! I built the same thing for a gate at our vacation house at a lake. The home-owners have to register their mobile number so that if you call a certain number the gate opens based on number recognition. Every time new people were at the gate (deliveries, guests, renters) they would need to call the owner, who had to hang up and call the gate’s number.

I use twilio to make outbound calls to that number using my registered phonenumber. I put a Django app in front for home owners so they can add authorized phone numbers with a expiration date.

Whenever someone is a the gate they call a twilio number, my django app checks the validity, opens the gate by calling the gate’s number with my number as ID, plays back some welcome message “hello chris, welcome to…” and sends the owner a push notification that person X is en route.

Todo: add a feature to redirect an unknown number directly to the owner and open the gate after manual verification.

Exactly, that's also my setup. Works as a charm! The power meter is a zwave switch which sits between the socket and the washing machine.
