The pope's "lane" is humanity. In reading the article, I found the position he puts forth to be measured and considered, focusing not on the technical aspects of AI, but rather on how to approach its use and implementation with empathy and careful thought.
I've been working on a super-straightforward volunteering platform -- https://handsup.barryvan.com.au/ . Mainly because I got frustrated with my kids' school and sailing club activities being (mis)managed across WhatsApp, Google Forms, pieces of paper, and the like.
Really interesting to see just how _loud_ the infrasound from these datacentres can be.
I'm curious as to what the cause is, though. I have to imagine it's related to the cooling systems in some way -- but is it the overall datacentre's cooling, or all the individual fans? Or something else entirely?
There are lots of ways to style these native controls, though, including ways to start from scratch and retain the accessibility affordances.
I'd be curious to know more about the usability issues you've found on mobile -- I've not had any personally when using radio buttons. I'll readily grant you that 'select' is awful everywhere though!
This is an unreasonably effective way of running cables. The first time I used it it felt like magic with how quick and painless it was.

As an Aussie, it terrifies me that it could be anywhere close to what working in America could be like. But having heard stories like the Walmart "smile" failure in Germany, I can only assume it's not too far off.
Most, including the company I work for, operate on a 100/100/80 model: 100% pay for 100% performance/output in 80% of the time. This means that, for example, meetings are generally short, on time, and straight into the topic. For me personally, and from what I've heard from colleagues, you get more done when you don't have the same mid-week or end-of-week slump.
The company I work for, Wonde, allows staff to choose the day. There's negotiation with the manager to ensure appropriate coverage across the week, and a fair bit of flexibility around swapping days around as and when necessary too.

I'm a PM and I assumed that this was parody at first. I've been guilty of using terms like this with customers ("Not something we can do at the moment, but certainly something to think about down the track."), but always with a sense of discomfort -- or an attempt to make it clear that it's a "nice no".
Inside a company, I don't think there should be space for these sorts of responses. I can see these only being necessary/used where people are disenfranchised and not involved in setting or understanding the overall product priorities. But then I've always seen the PM's prioritisation role more as an expert mediator than a dictator...
I've been thoroughly enjoying these streams. I think I now have a better understanding of a lot of the underlying basics of not only game dev but also general C++ development. All of my professional programming has been in higher-level languages so it's really interesting to me to see the thought processes that go into developing in C++.
Not quite, though. It's a shortcut to copy-and-paste text into a _Google_ app. For example, this wouldn't let you use Apple Maps or TripAdvisor or whatever other system you may prefer, instead funnelling you into Google's ecosystem. It's an attempt to bypass competitors hidden under by a façade of convenience.
Nobody that we know of has yet been hurt by this. I think it's very unfair and unhelpful to call people who flag issues like this "whiners". Would you accept a chainsaw which worked fine 99.9% of the time, but occasionally just exploded even with normal care and use? Why should LLMs be subject to a different set of expectations from any other tool?
Loads of music production opportunities on Linux! Reaper (which I use, albeit in Windows), Bitwig, Ardour, Renoise (which, as a tracker, may be more approachable for Devs), and more besides! And there's always CMusic (with various bindings, including Python) if you want something more akin to a sketchpad/algorithmic system...
This sounds very promising, although I do have to wonder whether we could have seen these improvements many years ago if Intel (and AMD) had focussed more on efficiency.
Is that really so problematic, though? It's the same as ABC iView and SBS OnDemand, from what I can tell... Perhaps this is just to comply with local law, then?
I think the point of the page was that unless the site/app/program is explicit about the language being displayed, you'll get Simplified Chinese. As HN is an English-language site, it uses the default. Similarly, your terminal doesn't prioritise Japanese over Simplified or Traditional Chinese.
By way of contrast, if you paste that into the search bar on https://yahoo.jp/ , you'll get the appropriate Japanese characters, as that site is explicitly Japanese.
Have you considered something like https://www.indiegamemusic.com/, where a lot of artists have their music available free or super cheaply?

In Australia, you need to make sure you have all your documentation lined up and iron-clad before you let someone go. Most companies I know of avoid firing, preferring to "encourage individuals to explore other opportunities" as this bypasses all of the complexities of unfair dismissal [1].

Looks like they've copied Firefox's download design -- which is a significant improvement. Chrome's strangely tall bottom downloads bar always confused me and seemed a waste of space.
Possibly... But I don't understand why that particular HDMI cable was causing issues with my USB devices -- with no visual artifacts or latency or other issues being evident on my screen.
But you're right -- I was possibly too quick to snark about MacOS when the real culprit is more likely the cheap random HDMI cable I used. :)
I recently diagnosed a very weird problem on my M32 MacBook Pro 13" where the _HDMI_ cable I was using caused my Logitech mouse (with 2.4GHz dongle) to stutter and disconnect/reconnect. Nothing to do with the display, my adapter/dongle, other peripherals, or other running apps. Still don't know _why_ that HDMI caused those issues, because the display was fine, but... MacOS is just sometimes obtusely weird!
A friend of mine wrote and published this Amiga GPT client recently. Seeing the Win 3.1 client here on HN prompted me to post this here too. I must admit that I find the instructions explaining that the app needs 20KB of memory right alongside its ability to work on a 4K display oddly hilarious.

My default assumption is that if people talk about "0.8FTE", they mean 80% pay for 80% time and 80% output, whereas "4dw" _should_ equate to 100% pay for 80% time and 100% output.
If it's anything other than 100/80/100, it's flexible work rather than a four-day working week.
Oh, absolutely! I have all the regular breaks etc. When I said "go out to lunch" I meant it more in the sense of "go out for a _loooong_ lunch involving a few courses and a bottle or two of wine". ;)
Not where I am! Rather, it's a negotiation with your manager to see what works best. That way, we can ensure we have coverage across the week. We're all "on" for Mondays and Tuesdays, and then people take Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday off according to preference and suitability.
Yes, more people take Friday than Thursday, but quite a lot of people enjoy the zen-like lack of distraction when they work Fridays. Or so I've been told!
