It really depends on how much risk you're willing to accept, and how much that is worth to you. It can be quantified via revenue lost, but reputation is much harder to put a number on.

RIM will remain the choice of companies and governments strictly due to BES; no other OS offers such direct central control over the users' devices. Companies (mine in particular) are struggling to cope with Apple and Android devices in the enterprise, and Windows Phone 7 only slighty better.

Have you used Office 2010? There are multiple options to pasting: Keep source formatting, merge formatting, and keep text only. The options in Excel are even greater.

I don't disagree with you that the numbers may be off, but consider the fact that the compressors in an A/C unit don't have to work as hard if the heat exchange is more efficient. That's saving electricity from the cooling fan AND the compressor.

I don't feel like you're adding a lot to the discussion by stereotyping and calling out "business guys". As a comparitively non-technical person to the average hacker news user, I would expect Amazon to quickly and clearly communicate to me why they are unable to provide the contracted service, what they are doing to remedy the issue, when it will be returned, and what we can do to avoid a similar outage in the future. From there, I can determine my risk aversion and the oppurtunity cost of choosing such a solution.

This is a story about Tory and the leaky canoe. I actually just created an account (pretty grueling process, I deserve some credit) to add my 2c: while focusing on professional skills and experience is a great thing for any curriculum, there is a value in "broadened horizons" that cannot be ignored.

Specifically, I found that the networking (meeting those outside your potential field) and ability to see things from other perspectives was invaluable in my college experience. This breaks down the "siloing" effect that I see a lot of talented CS majors have problems with, an effect that is consequently ruining the business world. Taking off the blinders once in awhile is a good thing, regardless how seemingly useless that Drama 101 class is. It's all what you make of it...
