Hi,

My name is Christopher (mom named me after Christopher Robin). You can call me Chris though.

I am a developer, programmer, coder, software engineer. Whatever title is in style and politically correct on this day. They say I'm a senior, but I feel like such a baby.

I like to build, code, learn and teach.

I live in Minneapolis, downtown proper.

I like to play Mario and Zelda.

I like to watch movies.

I like to read Foxtrot by Bill Amend.

I like to watched dubbed anime.

My favorite anime is Cowboy Bebop.

I like to play pick up ice hockey.

If I was a Muppet I would be Kermit.

If I was a Peanut I would be Charlie Brown.

I have a leather Leap, Embody (every option), Aeron (every option; upgrade).

I can agree, it's probably the better of these 3 I have. It's a tank and Steelcase told me it doesn't come apart and it's shipped assembled. My favorite part is that it reclines instead of rocking.

All my others have been posted already, except:

Shadows of the Empire [0]

When I read it the intriguing parts were that it took place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Also, I still play and love the game on N64 (also on PC and on GOG). I never thought I would read and actually enjoy a Star Wars book. Dash Rendar is eternally burned into my memory and my favorite Star Wars character of all time now. I think I need to read this again after typing this. Even my dad liked it and he is not into Star Wars.

I have a MacBook Pro 15", which is too big and actually pretty much resent and hate.

an iPad Pro 11" which I absolutely love, but is abysmal and no where near any good for coding on.

And currently eyeing that MacBook Air with a massive 2TB, 16GB, and i7 option for still less than the lowest end 16" MacBook Pro and just barely more than the stock 13" high end MacBook Pro.

How so?

Intermittent fasting is basically skipping breakfast for most people. Wake up late or sleep in a little extra, maybe make some coffee, go to work or school. Something most teenagers and college students do or have been doing for years. My self included as I much prefer extra sleep. I've some how been doing fasting since grade school and didn't even know it was controversial, disordered, or even called fasting until recently. My dad, who has done multiples of marathons and even Iron Man triathlons never ate breakfast and usually not lunch either. He seems fine and no one ever mentioned he had disordered eating.

Eating real food, having a preference towards certain real foods you like (some people just like more meat or eggs instead of fruit or potatoes or rice) and not being overly gluttonous is some how disordered eating. I don't buy that.

This is what I plan to do. I am trying to patiently wait for the Asus ROG version. It appears to have been delayed and there are 2 versions. One with a tripod and one with a typical iPad/tablet stand built into the cover. I'm mostly wanting it for console gaming because I don't want to get a TV or put another monitor on my desk. I also live in a small studio apartment that I can only fit my desk and bed in. This can be used on my desk or sitting in my bed even and will just slip right into my backpack if I wanted.

4-5 years doesn't sound significant to me.

I still have an iPhone 6, bought new nearly the day it was released. It plays music, it does podcasts. I can text, answer calls.

It's no longer supported by Apple.

I was planning on upgrading to the iPhone 11 Pro this year, but my current phone still does what it needs to do and does it well enough. It's a little slow though.

Maybe this isn't the place to post this, but it's been on my mind, especially with the recent release of Catalina, iOS 13, and iPadOS and this post made me recall.

With the hiring bar and exercises like FAANG put candidates through, one would expect if it's working well, why are the products, software, getting worse? I would think they would get more talented, educated, and smart engineers.

It seems like it's the opposite though. Catalina has to be the most bug ridden macOS I recall (I've been using macOS since 9), same goes for iOS 13/iPadOS. Not to mention the included software applications such as iTunes, Podcasts, ... I've read similar problems with Windows and Android, so I don't think it's only happening at Apple and I don't mean to specifically call out Apple, but that's the ecosystem I spend the most time with.

I feel as if the software quality should be improving. It would have less bugs, be more efficient, and run faster. I feel as if it's not though. It seems like it gets worse. This seems to be a problem with modern games too.

I can agree with this. It's especially wonderful without aliasing on an even multiple Retina display. For example, 2x on a 5k Monitor (iMac, LG Ultrafine) or MacBook Pro. It's simple, clean, tried and true.

I moved from Austin Downtown to Minneapolis for almost this reason. I didn't want to buy a car either and many if not most of the jobs are up in Round Rock or too far to bike or walk.

I now live downtown Minneapolis and it's been great, I even bought a condo and rent out my parking space for extra money ($200/month). My mortgage is less than my rent was in Austin (after my downpayment of course).

I'm still rocking an iPhone 6 and Apple stopped updates for me. I can't install iOS 13. I honestly don't have much desire to upgrade. I only use it for Music and podcasts with the occasional call or text message anyway.

I'm a developer also. I have no issues with the Touch Bar. I kind of like it. I never used the F keys anyway. I mapped my escape key to caps lock. I view it as the next iteration or evolution of the basic fingerprint reader on many PC laptops and notebooks.

I am more surprised by the hatred for it. It's extremely easily hackable [0] [1] and I was thinking all sorts of people would up with interesting ideas and uses for it over time.

Here I am with an iPhone 6 still.

It plays music, like my iPod did. As well as podcasts. I don't use any apps otherwise that don't come with it from Apple. On the rare occasion someone decides to call me it answers, sometimes (it's slow to answer, but after 3 retries, sometimes the first).

I try to answer text messages on my Mac with Messages.app. It's easier to type.

Not sure I want to upgrade. I was planning on it. I can afford it. Kind of just trying to see how long I can keep it going for fun. I think I've had it for close to 5 years now.

If this persons definition of social media is only Facebook and Instagram then I removed social media for the last 3 or more years.

Removing these (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) were nothing and easy for me. I just logged out and never bothered to log in. I haven't bothered with these in years.

Now, not visiting places like Reddit, maybe Hacker News, and consider removing other similar like internet communities for a year as well was a lot harder and still is at times. So, I have delegated to limit myself for now and not make an account. At least I try.

I found myself having trouble of finding something to read while I eat dinner every night, so I try to only limit myself to reading and browsing Reddit while I eat dinner each night for example.

However, my Hacker News addiction continues.

Can't agree.

Coming from a Thinkpad (the standard for what makes a great keyboard), PowerBook Titanium (keyboard was bad, but nothing like the 2016/17 MacBook Pro), PowerBook 12 / 17 (my favorite), and the first MacBook Pro (still pretty great) everything starting with the unibody has been downhill. Ever since, the keyboard and I believe battery even have not been user replaceable. There was a time one could walk into an Apple Store and actually purchase the battery in a box off the shelf, take it to the counter and buy it like any other product.

I have a 2017 and 2018 15 inch MacBook Pro. The 2017 is almost unusable. The 2018 is much better relatively. I also had a 2015 13 inch. Can't say the keyboard was great on that either.

I've been tempted to try retrofit a 12 inch PowerBook with more modern parts like the devoted Thinkpad users have done.

You could also walk into the Apple store. Go to the back corner. Pick up a box with a new battery in it for $119 (iirc). Buy it and walk out with a new battery. All in a single day. You could also order them online.

Mind-blowing.

You get more than just the eco system which is must just part of the experience. The hardware is that much better. It boils down to you get what you pay for. I value the convenience of what I need or want just working as well as the quality of the devices, especially compared to the alternatives. It's also not 5x as much, but I'm thinking you were exaggerating.

You mention the RAM and hard drive, but it irks me more my keyboard is not replaceable. It's the most used moving component of the entire unit. It's exposed and susceptible to damage the easiest. I've hated every MacBook Pro since the release of the unibody. My favorite was the PowerBook 12 and 17.

I've had a MacBook/PowerBook Pro (and Thinkpad) since Titanium and the First MacBook Pro and if it wasn't for the fact of macOS and the convenience of being in the Apple ecosystem with their iPhone, TV, HomePod(s), Watch, Music, and iCloud I would be back on Linux (I actually came from FreeBSD on my Thinkpad). I'm currently using a 2017 and 2018 MacBook Pro. The 2017 would be great except the keyboard (and of course the soldered RAM/HDD) is absolutely trash. The 2018 is much better, but nothing like a Thinkpad. I also miss the Trackpoint, but the Apple Trackpad is good.

I miss my Thinkpad (+ BSD) bad, but being an iOS / web developer and entrenched in the Apple ecosystem (which I honestly like the convenience) I feel stuck and hard to even get a secondary machine. I even leave a fully maxed out P53 and P1 (I can't decide which one I want) in my Lenovo cart ready to buy at a given moment.

When you say write down, do you mean design/list of tasks or literal code?

I live in a major metro area, so working out in my condo isn't an option and I do like getting out since I live alone (I go every day). I pick up what I need at the store when I walk home from the gym. It's an extra 10 minutes maybe. I keep my diet simple, meat, veggies, eggs, not much more and I don't eat any processed foods. My only chores are keeping my condo picked up instead of a mess of a bachelor pad, which it is in right now (har har).

Right now I'm trying to plan out my first side project in a while since job interviewing/preparation really burnt me out.

I also was able to solve it in a couple/few min after seeing the comment. I did have a couple issues, index was off by one, and didn't catch an issue if I had already seen the substring using a brute force nested loop, but otherwise it works (Python). Edit: I also did it without a nested loop using a dictionary. Why I didn't think of this initially I don't know.

I've also had a couple FAANG onsites and get nervous as can be, but that's just a practice more and be more confident with my abilities problem I feel. No offers though yet. Still trying and practicing.

I wish I had your problem.

After full time at work, gym, any real life tasks I need to attend (groceries, eating, bills, cleaning, etc...) it can be rather difficult and feels like starting a large project (or any) is hopeless (relatively for a single person in their spare time) or maybe intimidating.

Could you perhaps share some of your tips and wisdom as you are now older on how and when you started habitually doing this and how you keep up the energy and motivation? I'm surely not the only one interested in anything you can inspire with.

I have many ideas I want to start and I am excited about. Often I just do not know where to even start. Especially with limited time.

Car free in downtown Minneapolis for a while now and lease out my parking spot for $200/month.

Don't see how it could be any more convenient, easy, affordable and stress free of owning a car. Winter is easy with the Skyway [0].

I've seen people go get Starbucks in their pajama's, I can go to the gym, work, grocery store, Target, and more all through the Skyway when weather is bad.

The two light rails are only a block away and go from downtown to Mall of America and University of Minnesota. I have multiples of bus stops right outside my condo.

I usually just fill up a GoToCard with $20 when needed and go when ever and wherever I please without issues. Which gets me access to any bus or light rails.

The only downside I have so far is that I haven't found a good stop off the bus or light rails where I can conveniently and quickly get to play outdoor pick up hockey.
