You're right that there are still too many profs who use Top Hat for really basic stuff like polls in class and taking attendance - thankfully that's in the minority these days.
Our goal is to get profs to at least take these baby steps to get started and then to swap out their $200 textbook with content on our platform, which would save students a ton of money and create a much better experience in the process.

Our goal is to put an end to that kind of crap, where publishers charge $100-300 for a text and then gouge students another $50 on top of that for a homework system.
Most content on Top Hat is free or around the $20-40 price range, with most of the money going back to the author (vs. publisher model of paying a 5-10% royalty)

People are incorrectly thinking of this round as meaning that Magic is worth $40M. That's not how fundraising at this stage works.
The thought process is more along the lines of: - is this a VC fundable concept?
- are the founders impressive enough that Sequoia thinks they can pull it off?
- how much money does the company need to build what they need to build?
- how much does Sequoia need to own in order for them to get 10-100x return if the company succeeds?
Think of the $40M valuation as simply a back-calculated parameter based on how much Sequia needs to own with respect to how much capital the company needs and how big the opportunity could be.
The thought process is not: how much is Magic objectively worth now based on their EBITDA?

Unbelievable, 40+ comments and not one contrary opinion.
Alright, I'll be that guy. I have no trouble doing more than 4 hours worth of mentally strenuous work in a day, and neither do most of the people I work with. Frequently enough I've put in sustained 12-16 hour days for weeks on end to meet a tough deadline.
You'll generally find that the most successful people who are best at what they do have no trouble with this either. I'll go further and say that a large number of the people who complain about having to work more than a few hours a day are doing nothing more than rationalizing their lazy HN and/or reddit habits.
I'm based in Toronto as well and use Zipcar quite regularly. I've never had any of these issues and have nothing but great things to say about Zipcar.
You still feel inadequate because you're not as successful as some even more successful startups.
You still feel insanely stressed because there's even more at stake now.
You still wonder if you're working on the right thing.
I dunno. Things don't really change much honestly.

Isn't it more plausible that this is a key McDonald's location that has some kind of "experimental" menu that they use to test out new product ideas? so taking pictures of the layout or menu could potentially leak trade secrets.
The mafia idea seems quite far fetched, if only because you'd think McDonald's would do a fair bit of work to ensure none of their franchisees are using their brand as a front for organized crime.
We built something just like this in house, but of course as with any internal tool no one ever has time to update and maintain the damn thing.

Here's the thing about giving talks: people will remember only one or two things you actually said. As a result the approach one should have to putting together a good talk is totally different than the approach you should have in writing a good essay.
In a good talk you want to have one central point, repeat it half a dozen times, and pad it with a whole bunch of very memorable concrete examples. That's the only way you're going to make anything stick - otherwise people won't take away anything.
So the goal isn't to pack as much info and wisdom into a talk as possible - it's to pick that one central point and try and get people to remember it.
This is of course totally different than an essay where people reading it tend to be less distracted and have time to read it over if necessary. So you can be more liberal with how much information you're trying to convey and how complex the idea can be.
I would think that the type of person who would succeed in the startup world is one who would come up with an ad-hoc idea in order to do a startup, rather than the type of person who wouldn't do a startup because they couldn't think of an idea.
Anyway, it's an interesting experiment.

I guess my reading comprehension must be totally shot, because I interpret that as meaning that almost everything we know about techniques for learning is being applied, but the problem is just that some teachers aren't applying these techniques correctly. You know, instead of about 80% of teaching not giving a shit and there being no consequence to that for them.
