I see you're not familiar with Federal Code Title 49 Subtitle B Chapter V Part 571. In layman's terms that's Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which regulate among other vehicle specifications the type, location, and angle of projection of headlamps, taillights, and especially High Mounted Stop Lights (the center brake lights on vehicles).

In California, building codes are tightly integrated with fire code. For example, residential roofs cannot be entirely covered with solar panels because a firefighter may have to punch a hole in the roof to vent a fire.

I made a side trip to Wuppertal when I visited Köln because I'm a monorail enthusiast.

The psychological challenges are interesting.

Psychiatrists and psychologists often need to vent to a peer to deal with being the person who counsels others.

I imagine or hope that some cross training is performed in the sMARS mission so that one person who is incapacitated doesn't create a cascade of other problems (e.g., the French biologist can't attend to the life-sustaining Cyanobacteria).

A crew member suffering a mental breakdown could doom the mission. Is her medical kit stocked with sedatives? Does increased radiation exposure alter brain structure?

So many risks that we know of and some that we don't.

I was quite young and I still remember the wide expanse of beach with nearly vertical cliff walls.

I'm not fully up to date on California Coastal Regulations, but generally public access to beaches is an important public right. The state will not back down from this either I suspect.
