The current natural gas price in West Texas (the WaHa hub, north of Coyanosa, TX) is negative. And has been for a while. The price peaked (dipped?) to -$9/MCF a couple months ago. That means gas producers had to pay $9 per MCF for it to be taken away. Oil in the Permian comes with gas, a lot of it, so to produce oil, you need to get rid of gas. Wells I'm familiar with have 4000-5000 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil. Recall in oilfield M = thousand, so that's 4-5 MCF per bbl of oil.
There is no free gas pipeline capacity to get gas out of West Texas. Any time new pipelines are built, they are filled within months.
This makes a ton of sense for oil producers (which are also gas producers) who can sell their gas for less of a loss (potentially a profit!) and also for MSFT who can lock in long term contracts for minimal cost. I'd guess these contracts are for $1-2/MCF which is win/win for the oil companies in the area and MSFT.

GPT-5.5 is a solid leap with Codex or other harnesses. Opus 4.7 I still don't understand how people use... I tried it for a day or two, have tried it for a few hours every week or so since release, and still use 4.6 as daily driver (with xhi thinking).

There have been a couple "studies" and comparing various frontier-tier AIs that have led to the conclusion that Chinese models are somewhere around 7-9 months behind US models. Other comment says that Opus will be at 5.2 by the time Qwen matches Opus 4.5. It's accurate, and there is some data to show by how much.

Using this with tmux and various VPN tech. Main issue is scrolling. Termius + tmux don't scroll very well. And I've been led to believe tmux is necessary to keep sessions open when I turn off my phone screen
Thanks! How I eventually found it was stripping stuff back layer by layer. And by that I mean I started with the raw camera feed and got to where things worked well in a different swift view. And then from there, peeled stuff back from the main process feature by feature. And then bam, aircraft were exactly where they should be (minus the compass inaccuracy). I even had stuff like drawing mountain peaks (I live near Denver) as "aircraft" to figure things out, determining different FOV at different zoom levels (a lot of AI keyed in where the boxes would move in one direction at low zooms, be completely correct at some middle zoom, and then in the opposite direction at high zoom).
And that peeling back was me looking at each function to see what it did (I am a dev, but not for SwiftUI). So yep, can't vibe code it all!

a 16" natural gas pipeline moving 200 MMscf/d at pressures >1000 psi (relatively standard numbers, 16" can go up to ~600 MMscf/d) has a power transport capability of 2.5 GW (thermal). burn that in 60% efficient combined cycle turbines and you get 1 GW of electricity. that's a lot easier than building 1 GW of electric transmission lines.
Other countries are very much the same. Almost always located near giant hydroelectric generation facilities. Brazil + Russia are two big ones that come to mind. Probably China too.
DDR4 prices are up 2-6x in the last couple months depending on frequency. High end, high speed modules (e.g. 128GB 3200MHz LRDIMM) are super expensive.
Believe me, I have read that post/comment quite a few times. There are actually Pi 4 hats for sale for audiophiles (that seem to believe that you need 54000000.000 MHz system clock or whatever it is for Pi4 (Pi3 is 19.2 MHz) for optimal audio) that have an OCXO on them. But in another comment I said I'm not sure my soldering skills are that good.
There is a difference between telling Claude to do something and actually doing it, and writing about it. The fact that this has 199 points as of writing this comments means people want to read about the results. You will probably be quite unhappy to learn that Claude write the majority of the blogpost as well -

Others have mentioned the temperature compensation. I've done it and it sounds like I should do that for the next writeup. A simple DS18B20 close to the Pi produces reasonable results.
1 - I like to consider myself an expert eBay-er (my ebay account can legally buy alcohol in the US, and I am myself only 36 years old) but I have not found any ZED-F9P for less than $90 ish. I am aware of the Quactel (sp) modules, and am considering a set for some RTK experiments. Is that what you're referring to?
2 - I've thought about replacing with ocxo but the pads are tiny. My soldering skills aren't nearly as good as my ebaying skills.
3 - it is outputting 16 Hz, chrony is doing dpoll -4 poll 4.
4 - I have done tempcomp (it is not active for the post referenced by this HN post). Fun stuff and probably my next writeup.
Chrony does have ability to do temperature compensation. I've done this and need to do a write up on it. It's not super easy to keep all the parts working together. Basically you feed chrony a table of temperatures and expected clock frequency and it subtracts it out.
I did this at one point, putting the pi directly on some packing foam. It for sure dampened the ambient effects but really I just need to stick the whole Pi in a temperature controlled chamber.
I do have that as well, but haven't done a write up on it yet. It was a $70 GPSDO from eBay (BH3SAP variant running Fredzo firmware with some changes to enable flywheel (generating pulse in absence of GPS PPS)). I have verified it can feed the Pi for NTP. Believe the STM32 driving the GPSDO can as well but it has no ethernet capability as-is

Some notes that weren't included in this post:
I do have my LEA-M8T generating time pulses at 16 Hz, with a dpoll of -4 in the chrony config. The poll interval of 16 seconds means it gets 256 samples which also improved the stability.
I do also have that mentioned BH3SAP GPSDO sitting next to me on my desk. I had Claude update the firmware to allow "flywheel" behavior so it continues to generate pulses in the absence of GPS PPS. That's coming in another post. Also had Claude update the firmware to spit out TSIP (trimble proprietary protocol) info for lady heather.

of course it is, how else are you going to create a drill string that needs to grow to 10000m+ long? drill pipe is flexible(ish, for varying definitions of "flexible") but not nearly enough to do a coil of it for that long. coil tubing is a thing but is much thinner and smaller diameter and isn't nearly as strong. it also can't rotate.
drill string comments aside, this appears to be a very standard deepwater offshore drill ship
