The lack of IRL 'third places' for young people to meet locally will only exacerbate the issue -- and probably should bear most of the blame. The car-centric infrastructure of the suburbs (well, the vast majority of America) encourages isolation and asocial behavior. It really sucks that for some, their lives will never go beyond that invisible cage.

The shift in perception of alcohol is certainly a good sign. Even outside of the health benefits, a night out at the bar is expensive now (at least on the East Coast) and honestly speaking other drugs are simply more cost-effective. I still have the occasional cocktail when going out with friends but now that I'm focused more on my overall fitness I find less of a reason to drink now. Still love the vibe of bars and pubs though.

Absolutely. I feel like I've stagnated in my learning, no, even declined in what I know and my habits aren't helping either. I think I need to quit my job, get my life together and undo all that damage. I want to learn more about programming and get back into maths...

Last week I watched Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal which deals with this question quite literally, as the main character spends most of the plot in conflict with the very personification of death, in the era of the Black Plague when it seemed everyone was dropping like flies.

Some people obsess over what's beyond and fall to despair or cling to religion when there's no definite answer, not that any of us know anyway. Death is probably easier to deal with if you're alone and have nothing, but that in itself makes life much more bland. Bergman probably agreed, at least that's the way I understand it now -- keeping yourself busy with community and the pure things that make life sweeter like strawberries, like family and friends, is how humanity 'ought' to face the realization that life is short. Sure, you'll be scared when the time comes but at least it was a life with meaning.

I want to rekindle my curiosity and re-visit a few subjects I've forgotten since graduating, i.e. discrete mathematics, algos, etc. The second half of last year was rough for me as I got put into a leadership position involuntarily and I've been struggling and burning out ever since. This year I want to take back some of my life and rein in some of the negative habits I've developed then.

I took this class while I was in grad school! Ended up dropping due to reasons but the instructor was great. I'm pretty sure the course materials are up on YT as well.

I was heavily considering using Turbo Tax a few years back until I learned about the various Free File options on the IRS. Previously, I was dumb enough to rely on those tax-preparation services despite my taxes being simple enough to do on my own... I was worried some of the options wouldn't be 'feature-complete' as I had some money earned from self-employment, but they were just as good (or better) than Turbo Tax despite the 'older' UI.

Even if you don't technically qualify for Free File, the fees are much lower there than what you would pay on Turbo Tax. For example on 1040Now filing a federal tax return when ineligible for Free File only is about $20. Intuit can crash and burn.

I'm trying out 26reads, though it's pretty new and doesn't have too many features yet. I like the UI though.

I want to read more books and start getting my financial life in order. I've been lucky enough to get a raise only a few months after getting my most recent job and it's afforded me a little more money each month to play around with. I'd like to start investing a little bit as well as build up an emergency fund.

Additionally, I'm lucky enough to still have a few online lecture recordings available from the classes I took for my master's degree. At the time I was more focused on just passing owing to being so demotivated from the pandemic that I barely absorbed anything. It's been a real regret of mine and especially now that this knowledge can actually be applied (enterprise software design, microservices etc.) I want to take the time to actually give a damn and learn something by re-watching these lectures and taking good notes.

I just started a new role and I really hope I don't have to commute to the office. WFH and gaining back time otherwise spent on commuting has been a blessing.

I've barely used Reddit's web interface ever since the redesign, and don't get me started on the mobile browsing experience. The generic UI, the useless features have just really turned me off from ever using any official webapp of theirs. I'd say the sole aspect I like is the rich markdown editor. I knew it was over when I saw that the account sign-up form essentially almost deceives new users into forking over their email address.

I've often found that "skipping the details" and learning only as much as I -need- truly is the most useful thing you can do to learn something new.

But at the same time you need other sources of income to hedge your risk and give you some starting capital, and that's where the traditional system of work comes in.

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you on this, your bottom-line software engineers shouldn't be outed and publicly shamed. In this case, however, the CTO, a person at the top of the org chart, must be cognizant of these sorts of vulnerabilities especially at a company with a growing userbase and a target on its back (mind you I don't support Gab or anything they stand for, it's just the reality of things). I wonder if things will get to the point (or maybe we're already there) that it would be feasible enough to set up something akin to a SaaS/PaaS for botting operations. Similar to how DDoS crews rent time and botnet resources for customers, such a service could auction off time slots (e.g. specific 'drop' dates in the case of sneakers) to users who want to buy en masse or ensure that they can at least get some amount of the product they want.

I feel like this phenomena really can only happen in 'first-world' countries like America -- in fact, maybe it's almost a uniquely American thing driven by our culture of optimism... combined with the need to look trendy, which doesn't really have any geographical boundaries.

I don't think we're remotely at that point yet. Anyone who has paid attention to US news at all last year can see that we've still got some ways to go before the society of the last man is realized. That said, the conditions for another Mishima to arise just aren't there despite the rise in right-wing rhetoric and violence in the past few years.
