So true. I once received an RFP template where our competitor had forgotten to clear their company (and even author) from the document details. I was glad because it helped us avoid a complete waste of time.

They also vacuum up the trail of crumbs that led to them, making our standards for new ideas impossibly high.

Unrelated to this post, I was trying to downgrade my account from premium to free today. It was surprisingly hard to find the path. I had to google it. Btw, it's under "Privacy and Settings", not under "Account" where you'd expect.

I have nothing against LinkedIn and find it helpful. It just struck me as something that was discussed in a design meeting- "how can we make cancellation hard to do?"

I like the clever use of css-based animations on the marketing site. The Invision feature tour (http://www.invisionapp.com/tour) does a great job of this as well. It probably goes unnoticed by the majority of visitors, but I think it communicates great design and attention to detail in a very subtle way. Hats off to the designers and marketing team that built a great site to get the message out.

Many of you may have already done this. But I never got around to it (Win7 isn't my primary dev box). It only took me 3 minutes and it probably ROI'd the first day.

I've been to Kenya (village of Ngaamba) 4 times in the last 5 years on service trips through the 410Bridge organization. Their model relies on a village leadership council to prioritize need and decide how resources should be used. Then we come alongside and help. Our first trip focused on water. The second was infrastructure. The third was education. This past June it was staffing a medical clinic that was recently built. Now a community center has sprouted around the clinic and the trip next year will likely focus on micro-finance and entrepreneurship.

This isn't charity. It is partnering with a talented group of village leaders that understand the needs of the community far better than we could. There is accountability but it's driven locally and it's sustainable. They'll be able to carry the momentum they created long after we're gone.

There are plenty of models that work, and I'm glad there are so many helping out. But I've seen first-hand that allowing a community to pull the help they need works better than a foreign push model.

The Social Network isn't a grandiose documentary. If you just look at it as an entertaining story based loosely on people you know written by a talented guy (Aaron Sorkin), it's pretty enjoyable. You might actually like it. And the tech angle must be somewhat attractive if you're drawn to HN.
