Agreed, one of my great pleasures during COVID when I had terrible insomnia and couldn't sleep was to cycle down to Billingsgate in the morning and eat one of the fantastic bacon and scallop rolls from the cafe in the market. Definitely going to miss the place.

Unlikely, dead dark stars being dark matter candidates is a theory known as MACHOs (massive compact halo objects)
If they exist we would expect to detect them as they pass between another star and earth creating a gravitational lens. You can estimate the number of these MACHOs by looking at a bunch of stars for a long period of time and counting the number of microlensing events you see.
A team did this in 2000 and found that while there were some events, there weren't enough to explain all of the dark matter around the Milky Way. https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0001272
In many cases the status page of a service is an unreliable indicator (e.g. AWS's) so I find HN / Twitter to be a much better signal that an incident that affects many people is happening.
In that in the browser you are able to see that you have gotten a 301/302 response but can't see where the redirect would have sent you.

As (one piece of anecdotal) evidence, I was talking with a guy that drives for both Uber and a local cab company. The cab company pays more, but he still prefers driving for Uber as he is put in far fewer sketchy situations by them.
No, because the noise modeling test in the second LIGO detector (LIGO Hanford) was being wobbled at a very different frequency to that of the gravitational wave they were able to filter out the test motion and were still able to detect the merger.

Impressive stuff, I especially like the style transfer that can be done by using the global features of one image and the local features of another (Fig. 7)
What I find somewhat annoying is that whilst they show some examples from their validation set, and a couple of examples of the model failures. They don't appear to show a random selection of cases from their validation set.

It depends on the airport that you are travelling from. London City has famously fast security, currently you can check-in upto 15 minutes before the scheduled time of departure for a flight to New York. [1]

In a very real way it was. There were two completely geographically separate instruments which recorded the same signal with a delay that is consistent with the light travel time between them.
In the future this will get better when VIRGO in Italy and KAGRA [2] in Japan come online. Then we will have 4 independent detectors which will be able to verify that same signal is observed at the same time.
Obviously of course given the transient nature of what is being observed once the merger has occurred it will very rapidly stop producing gravitational waves so we will not be able to measure the same event again.
Part of the reason for that is that LIGO isn't exactly a Michaelson interferometer in that it has an extra pair of mirrors in each arm. If you look at this schematic [1] then in a traditional Michaelson interferometer you would only have the mirrors that are at the end of both arms.
With LIGO there is an extra set of mirrors within the arms this allows the light from the laser to bounce between them ~100 times or so increasing the effective path length greatly.

I assume that it is because QuickTime is using your GPU to decode the h.264 but VLC isn't.
There is support for hardware accelerated h.264 decoding in VLC; you just need to enable it. I think the option is in Input and Codecs tab in the preferences.
Whilst that is true, it really all depends on the resistance of the thing that you are passing the current through.
Remember that P = I^2 R (i.e. power goes as the square of the current for a constant resistance)
so for an object of constant resistance then to double the current than you need 4 times the power.
Likewise with the "predictions" of the authors likes/dislikes. Testing how the model will perform on an independent data-set (or at least cross validation [1]) would be much more interesting.

Just as a reason for doing this in parallel. Space based detectors (such as LISA) are sensitive to a different frequency range than ground based detectors such as LIGO and thus to different of astrophysical phenomena [1]
There is also another, more practical, reason for the lack of trees and general greenery next to the train lines.
In 1953 we are still in the age of steam and trees were cut back from the lines to reduce the risk of fires from hot ash.
There was a pretty interesting article with the BBC to accompany this a while back.
I'm always surprised that FITS [0] doesn't get more of a look in outside of astronomy. It works very well in my experience for storing tables of data as well as images.
