I like its ability to list stock symbols based on themes. As a long term investor who invests in specific industries, I have established fundamental and technical criterion I use to evaluate stocks and identify buy/sell times. But, I'm always on the look out for new stocks. Your "Theme" search is a useful feature in this regard.

Completely agree about the prejudice against the well established. I am not affiliated with the Delphi project, but work in this space. Not having knowledge of the effectiveness of the Delphi autonomous system, can't speak to that. But, with regards to their mechanical design, this team has demonstrated autonomous capability with a familiar and covert form factor: obscured GPS antennas, LIDAR and cameras. And computing. Not visible in either the rear seat or trunk [1, 2].

Also important to mention that this product is a partnership between Delphi and Ottomatika [3]. Ottomatika is the company that won the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge from CMU and provides the SLAM and software expertise.

Admittedly, the Google's of the world help with the lobbying and regulatory efforts which eventually expedite the technology transfer to the market for the Delphi's and smaller startups in this space [4].

I like the thought that has gone into expressing the app's motivations. As a curated app, I was interested in learning about the people behind it. Your About, FAQ/Editorial and Licenses section under timeline.com/about was fun to read. Too bad it was hidden away on the homepage. But, maybe you did this intentionally.

I'm in the process of working on a timeline-like design, non news related, so this piqued my interest.

I've been looking for a technical explanation as well. The best I've found so far are a host of the patents ostensibly associated with pCell implementation [1], [2], [3], etc.

Expandable memory via SD + PDF viewer + hierarchical folder structure + E-ink in a form/fit as shown would be perfect for my academic needs of reading through journal papers.

As @noonespecial alludes to, some of the comments on the WSJ site and (less so) here are made incognizant of the complexities of the systems and timelines of procurement, testing and deployment.

@tsally the DEF CON suggestion is a good point. Because of ITAR, it is unlikely that the actual "toy" will be provided, but a comparable subsystem wouldn't be out of the question. E.g. The DoD regularly operates rapid reaction challenges with a simulated problem from theater - see http://www.kirtland.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123120737 Something similar could be done with DEF CON.

I think it is important to maintain perspective when stories like this come out. Contrary to some of the comments, defense contractors and researchers/engineers at gov't R&D labs do put the priorities of the warfighter first. Consider that many of the engineers/contractors/researchers/etc working on technology development are combat veterans themselves.

The issue is that we face adaptive adversaries.
