I can imagine Honda executives thinking that they can wait out the awkward transition period and, when motors and batteries are fully sorted, simply swap out the fossil fuel bits.

I don't know, this actually sounds like a really good strategy. Jaguar, Ford, Porsche and others have spent a lot of money (and arguably brand capital) trying to get in early and developing EVs with too many trade-offs and limitations. Why not wait until you can develop a _really good_ 500-mile-plus, reliable, daily driver EV, if you feel you can get away with waiting?

And most users surely don't care about the whole software-defined-vehicle thing.

The main advantages of hexagons are that the distance to each neighbour is always the same, and the distortion across the globe is much less, because of the way H3 creates its grid (compared to the earlier Google S2 which uses squares and distorts a lot). There’s an excellent Uber blog post about this, I’ll see if I can find the link.

The reality for most graduates is even grimmer:

• £25,000 starting salaries at traditional engineering firms

• Exodus to consulting or finance just because it's compensated better

This is _exactly_ my career so far.

The key thing about the British economy is that while most things operate in a free market, construction is centrally planned by councillors who are incentivised to block most development. So the whole economy is struggling, but industries that need physical space are especially hard hit. Your local council can't block you from writing more code, but can stop you from building lab space near where people want to live and work.

My first job out of uni was in a wonderful small engineering firm in Cambridge. Lab space there is eye-wateringly expensive because it's illegal to build enough, so we were based in a makeshift lab in an attic next to the sewage works. I loved working there, but it shows that we're restricting our small businesses unnecessarily through our planning system.

The solution is frustratingly simple, but politically suicidal for any government that tried to implement it: just legalise development subject to basic design codes. I hope we see some planning reform before it's too late for our struggling innovation industries.

I believe that Nando's does the same thing. They always take the table number after asking you if everything's okay.

Interestingly, just as in technical systems, problems arise from trying to keep the state consistent between two separate systems (the table and the kitchen, in this case). At the table, the 'Waiting for Food' state is indicated by the presence of the table number, but in the kitchen, this state is indicated by the presence of a slip of paper with your order on it.

In my experience, it's quite common for the kitchen to misplace your order slip, so the two states get out of sync. To the kitchen, it looks like you've got your food (or you don't exist), but at the table, there's no food so no one checks on you.

It's definitely one of the more unsettling titles I've read recently, but this quote makes it a little less dystopian:

"The CWT-TP process is designed to handle almost any imaginable waste, including turkey offal, tires, plastic bottles, harbor-dredged sediment, old computers, municipal sewage sludge, cornstalks, paper-pulp effluent, infectious medical waste, and oil-refinery residues".

As a complete layman, it seems to me like a really neat way to handle waste and oil dependence in one go. I'm sure there's lots of reasons why it wouldn't be practical though.

Thanks for clarifying. Does this mean they can't have a backup and then delete that backup after the data has been successfully deleted from the main db?

Of course, it's easy for me to say these things in hindsight but my point is that this is an issue with the organization not having the right processes, rather than the technology going wrong. This is alluded to in the article: "Policing minister Kit Malthouse said the problem had been identified and the process corrected".

I disagree with describing these events as 'technical issues' or 'IT errors'. As other commenters have noted it appears that there just wasn't a working backup. If that's the case, it's more of an organizational failing in my view: no-one cared enough to make a working backup.

It's similar to the 'IT error' in our test and trace system recently, where thousands of positive covid test results were uncounted because Excel truncated the file after a certain number of rows. In my view, it's not really the tech at fault, it's that the organization was using Excel because they didn't care enough to do it properly.

Calling it a 'technical issue' puts the blame on a malfunction, making it seem unfortunate but unavoidable, and absolving the organization that actually caused the issue.

My friends and I became obsessed with Blender when I was around 13 or 14. This was around 10 years ago and the interface was definitely idiosyncratic back then, but we didn't find any difficulties learning it, and we were able to make some amazing things. Blender made up a lot of my GCSE* in art and gave me some great times working on Blender projects with my friends on Google Hangouts way past our bedtimes.

I'd fully recommend it to your nephew.
