not necessarily. if he bought your car and traded up from a real clunker with worse fuel efficiency the net result is likely better.

other way to deal with intermittency is to dynamically price electricity. then people can shut off/on usage in response. many activities do not need to be done exactly at a certain time.

it doesn’t all need to be fixed on the supply side

superchargers are not too bad. 30 mins at a charging station while you grab food and stretch your legs is all it takes.

this is really amazing. as a rails person who enjoyed having ppl much more experienced than I give me best practices "rails", django always felt a bit daunting the few times I tried it because there weren't as many best practices to follow.

asking people to store something for a very long time is very hard. Take the nuclear waste from the US atom bomb tests in the pacific. They capped the thing w/ tons of concrete but sea level rise and cracks are making it inevitable its going to cause a mess. And thats literally less than a century ago. The half life of these things is tens of thousands of years.

I think you underestimate how 'temporary' many seemingly strong structures are and how high the temptations to cut costs are. Its very easy to be like "welll...this'll probably hold. I'm sure of it."

yes its a colossal waste of time that could be spent on more productive things (or with family and friends)

there are stories of many empty office buildings fully powered with the lights on throughout the whole thing. Its possible if they were on a more price sensitive system those commercial property owners would have opted to shut off more of the power.
