Cant help but think they should reduce their store footprint and increase product density. I personally would love to buy a monitor after looking at it physically in-store but I want a good selection, not the 2 random monitors they happen to have in-stock that meet my size, resolution requirements. If I have to buy online, amazon is cheaper.

What an exaggeration. I use a pen and paper to take notes all the time at work as a dev. Let's face it most kids are just distracting themselves with a chromebook if they're using it in class.

I mean, you can use the amazon website on the iphone and circumvent all the limitations for example. They want to use the platform apple provides to create apps (good user experiences). So, this analogy doesn't seem apt to me

So I am someone who has done a masters in CS but it was completely coursework and project-based. I have regretted not doing any "research" or having any papers published. I guess, I just want to experience the whole process of diving deep into a topic and coming up with something new. Now, I'm about 3 years into my career as software engineer working on data infrastructure for a data science org in a large non-tech company. Could I potentially volunteer my coding skills to a professor who has a lab in some field I am interested in and join in their work in my personal time. I never thought that is possible. I'd actually like that. Can someone who has any experience or seen something like this comment?

I would say I'm in a somewhat similar boat where I believe the work and problems I get to work on are very unexplored and super interesting but the company and industry doesn't "value" software engineers at the moment. Tbh, in a capitalist society, I cannot accept that and am looking for a change. Give me cash or give me stocks in the company, neither and you just take me for a fool. I am sincerely curious what your thoughts are on this, why would you accept a massive paycut to work on something interesting for a company that makes $$ off your work?
