There are a couple of CS programs, especially community colleges, where they actively ask for folks with industry experience to mentor students.

There are also boot camp programs that do the same. In particular, I have mentored at Hackbright Academy, and I only have great things to say about the experience. I am pretty sure that I get more out of the experience of mentoring the students than they do :)

PagerDuty is growing like crazy and we need great engineers to help us build what Incident Management should look like. Every company is becoming more dependent on software, and with that, they are becoming more dependent on the people they need to run their software. We aim to help people build great software by being able to rapidly learn and get better.

We are hiring across the entire stack: Backend, Frontend, Infrastructure, Mobile, Security, etc. Check out our jobs site, if there is a role that you are interested in, feel free to get in touch with me directly or shoot over any questions.

PagerDuty - https://pagerduty.com/jobs - San Francisco, Toronto, Some Remote Positions

We are hiring up and down the entire stack. Backend, Frontend, Ops, Mobile, Security, Data... you name it, we are hiring for it.

We work on problems that do not have textbook solutions. Our traffic spikes involve 5x load in under 10 minutes. Our UX has to work for someone at 3am. Our availability requirements are higher than our customers' requirements.

Feel free to hop over to https://pagerduty.com/jobs and see what you like there. Or feel free to just email me directly if you want to learn more.

We are lucky that our customers care deeply about our availability, so feature work/improving the infrastructure is the same thing most of the time.

As for fostering the culture, part of it is that we perform post-mortems on all outages and measure the customer impact. Many of our problems do not have textbook answers, so the post-mortems become a cave diving exercise to find the answer. We have to build our own answers, and sometimes, like this one, build our own workarounds.

The success of this will depend heavily on the people doing the parsing of applications and matching them to the right company. While I like the idea of lowering the barrier for applying for jobs, I cannot help but think that many students will look at this as another opportunity to focus on quantity of applications they send out. Instead, I would rather that students take some time to research and figure out on their own what they want for an internship, rather than just sending out a bunch of applications/resumes.

Another way to combat this is make it easier for people to publish data that goes against their hypothesis and still give them 'points' for it. Part of the problem in academic labs is that there is this race to publish papers to get more funding to publish more papers to get more funding and so on. If journals stopped treating data that goes against an initial hypothesis as 'bad data' there would be a incentive to still publish it, and ideally, prevent someone else from repeating the same experiment/hypothesis.

That's not uncommon, assuming that an initial phone screen counts as an interview.

I have had stretches where it took me talking to ~80 candidates between initial phone screens, random chats, etc over two months before finding someone to hire.

And to be clear, I am not claiming that I found the 'best' person out of 80 people. 'Best' is a very custom definition depending on the environment, role, and fit.

Email is meant for asynchronous communication (or at least it is supposed to be).

Any immediate alerting that relies on email communication is broken. You should not be constantly having to watch your inbox simply to be parsing messages to figure out what alerts are meaningful. Let the machines do that work for you by setting up and constantly refining your alerts correctly.

Los Gatos, CA - Netflix

My team at Netflix is looking for Site Reliability Engineers to come in and help solve our availability and reliability challenges. We have one of the largest AWS footprints out there and are constantly finding out about the limits of AWS technologies.

We have a unique problem that we want to figure out how to enable all of our engineering teams to deploy faster and more often, while still increasing the overall availability of the Netflix streaming service. We do this by building tools/services for engineering teams and by helping teams figure out ways to make their software more reliable.

Smart companies understand that good candidates are rarely on the job market for more than a few weeks (if at all). The recruiting speed of a company is usually indicative of their overall speed.

'First, Break All the Rules' is a great read. For new managers, I highly reccomend 'The First 90 Days'

Remember not to just accept everything in these books. They should be read with the expectation that you will have to pull out the useful pieces that are relevant to you.

This reminds me of one of my favorite TED talks by Mike Rowe (http://www.ted.com/talks/mike_rowe_celebrates_dirty_jobs.htm...) where he talks about 'following your passion' and work in general.

Like most things, following your passion is about priorities. For a lot of people, treating their passion as the most important thing in the world is not sustainable for them. This idea that all of us need to tell ourselves what makes us happy and then do it is also the wrong way to go about figuring out what makes you happy. I cannot even count how many mistakes I have made and then accidentally discovered what made me happy. There is no way I could have known what it was ahead of time.

I was hoping for more insight into why the Japanese factories are unable to keep up with the lower costs from other Asian factories.

Japanese manufacturing has always had a strong reputation with continuous improvement in their factories. This supposedly leads to lowered costs through efficiency. I am assuming that even with the decades of improvements, the lower wages of the other countries are still able to bring down the overall cost.

Another item to add: Be good at filtering tasks when they come in.

A lot of people are not good at simply discarding work when it comes in, which is the best time to say 'No' or do the quick analysis to see whether it will actually add value.

Unfortunately, this takes some time and intuition to build up. You have to trust yourself that you can make decisions that are fast and accurate.

Fire Me, I Beg You 14 years ago

Another good mental technique is to think about the work week or period ahead of you after doing something you enjoy. If you find that the thought of it makes you irritated or unhappy, you need to immediately stop and figure out why. Is it the project you are working on? Is it your manager? Is it your team? Is it the company?

Whatever it is, it always warrants a serious conversation with your manager. Ideally, it is something within your or your manager's control.

We're hiring at Netflix for all types of positions. We have some ex-Yahoo folks that are doing really well here. If you are interested, just shoot me an email (in profile) with what kinds of roles you are interested in, and I'll get you over to the right people.
