Yes, you are right. Most of the data on our platform is for out of warranty cars since that's our target market. Also, 85% of the cars in US are out of warranty.

Hey Marcell! You nailed it. 80% of the money that consumers pay in the shop goes to the shop, not the mechanics (because of the infrastructure cost). This allows us to pay more and charge less, still have healthy margins.

There is a ton of analysis in this post about what went wrong. As someone who runs a service marketplace business, I know how hard it is scale this type of business (scaling quality, managing a remote workforce, supply churn, repeat usage and all the other things...). The founders had worked long and hard to succeed (knowing them first hand). They also happen to be incredibly nice people - always willing to help others. All the best to Adora & Aaron. I look forward to seeing what you launch next!

I think they are targeting dinner for families. I always order 2 meals since they don't deliver lunch. You have to order food before 10am and they deliver b/w 3-6. My food is definitely sitting at least 1-2 hours because it is being delivered from SF to Mt view. I believe they have proper storage in the delivery vans - I don't know the details though.

I haven't tried Sprig yet, but Munchery's business model is awesome. They are not trying to be a fast / cheap food service. They hire top notch chefs who prepare high end food. The cost of meal is b/w $10-$15. The quality of the food is what you will expect in a high end restaurant. They are basically getting rid of all the real-estate of a high end restaurant and delivering awesome food directly to you (lots of economies of scale). I am spending roughly about $500 per month ordering food from them. Highest quality food, delivered to you at very reasonable prices (I'm pretty sure I'll pay at least 50+% more for the same food if I went to a high end restaurant).

According to IRS, $0.58 per mile is fair comp (for driving your own car). http://www.irs.gov/uac/2013-Standard-Mileage-Rates-Up-1-Cent.... In city, you can hardly drive over 35 miles/hour and you stop frequently. Even if you drive 10-20 miles per hour, that's $6 - $12. per hour.

I love this. couple of things you may want to test - either show all the fields (cc number, exp, name etc) by default, or dont show the name, expiration fields until the credit card number has been filled... its slightly surprising that the other fields show up after entering 5 or 6 digits... also, it is not very clear that I can click and enter the name, expiration date (as it was for cc number)... you may want to move the user directly to the next field after they have entered the previous field.

I am curious - what were you trying to get done through RepairPal? I was under the impression that they just provide repair estimate and shop listings...

All those things you have listed (types of jobs to do, types of jobs to avoid, sourcing parts, not ordering the wrong parts, making money after paying mechanics really well) were all big challenges. It took us a while to figure those things out and now its our competitive advantage. There are still occasional problems, but we are getting better at it every day. Our model assumes that 2% of the customers will have unreasonable demands / ask for refunds etc. Happy to chat anytime art @ yourmechanic.

"doing jobs that become much harder because of location, etc etc all for 30% less money" --- our mechanics make $75 an hour flat rate. That's 3x what they make at their respective dealerships (on an hourly basis). The fact that master technicians (all 8 ase certs, 20+ years of experience) from mercedes, ford, nissan and toyota are offering mobile car repair services and have already finished over 1000 repairs on our platform is probably a good indicator that not every mechanic thinks the way you do.

I am not claiming that you are wrong or that YourMechanic will succeed (only time will tell).

p.s. Of the 1000+ cars we have fixed, not a single customer ever came back to us claiming that our techs made the dents, scratches, stole stuff etc. I am sure we will one day run into some of those interesting people. I may be cynical and/or naive, but I happen to believe that most people are basically good.

Josh - they did their series A 7 months ago. They had raised ~ $1m for seed. I am guessing they didn't burn more than $1.5-$2m to fully scale one market and test what the unit economics look like at a small scale. Since they probably had $3.5-$4m in the bank and they chose not to scale to a few more markets, my guess is that either they really found a much better business opportunity, or they discovered that even at scale retention rate/LTV was low.

We currently use paychex and hoping to switch to ZenPayroll as soon as you guys allow us :). The biggest attraction is the API which will make managing all our workforce sooooo easy!

But hopefully people also realize that the existence of a co-founder doesn't mean that there is no clear leadership. YourMechanic would not be feasible without my incredibly talented co-founder, but the buck still stops with me. I talk to my co-founder & team about big decisions, but I make and take responsibility for all the decisions.

Having run different businesses for 5 years as a single co-founder, I have found that there is something magical about having the 'right partner' (in my case, brilliant + 100% dependable).

yea, it is really hard to compete on oil change price. 80% of our services are price competitive (even up to 30% less expensive).

we are getting there :). more like yourmechanic.com/problem/car-is-not-starting - some place where you can all the common reasons etc. There are a lot of things we need to improve.

mechanic set their own time. response time really depends on how busy they are. we don't promise a response time yet. our mechanics use our mobile app to do all their scheduling. it is really fill your spare capacity model (work on weekends, evenings, free days during week) etc.
