I suspect that number comes from this quote a little further down

Every function in this program was just two, or three, or four lines long. Each was transparently obvious. Each told a story. And each led you to the next in a compelling order. That’s how short your functions should be!

It's different for me in a couple ways:

1) I have the same background noise issue as the sibling comment. I can't have a conversation in a bar. Coffee shops are usually much more quiet, brightly lit, designed for sitting in and working/talking quietly.

2) It sucks to be the only sober person in a group. Caffeine doesn't have the same effect.

3) Bars are pretty hit or miss on if they have any non-alcaholic options (lemon juice concentrate + water doesn't count). Most coffee shops have great non-caffeinated options (horchatas, juices, smoothies/milkshakes, ciders, tisanes)

Only post singularity. Much of the appeal of roleplaying games is being able to do stuff that you can't do in video games. But a sibling comment did link to a tool that would let you play these maps with your friends by importing them into a virtual tabletop.

refactoring without test coverage is flat-out "Cowboy coding": reckless & irresponsible.

This is basically what Fowler says in his refactoring book. Actually, he says it's by definition not refactoring. I'm curious why you don't think it's worth reading.

There's a big grey area between the life threatening stuff, and the stuff that will slowly mess you up for life. Simple example, but the drugs people take for pain increase your odds of a heart attack if taken habitually. It feels deeply unethical to have "take drugs that will ruin you once your career is over" be the minimum requirement for a career in sports.

People dink for fun mostly, or to make the experience more comfortable for them, rather than for productivity

In the world of "decades ago" we are pre-smartphone. How, exactly, are you going to call up the taxi driver for a chat?

People... talked before phones were invented?

Why is it so hard to imagine that the guy from the car service you always use might exchange some small talk when he drops someone off? Sometimes a friendly relationship develops between people who regularly interact

The driver was a specific person that the company knew. Maybe they were a secret homophobe or something, but you could say that of all the company's employees with just as high a likelihood.

It's absurd to trust this person like this

If your friend told you "man, my last customer was a jerk" you would distrust that?

100%

There are games that democratize the power of the GM a bit. Very traditional RPGs are into putting pressure on the GM to be a one-man band for the players' entertainment, but the more "modern" ones share the authority, get the players involved in worldbuilding and/or expect the players to be proactive (rather than just respond to the GM)

It's more like if mineral placement was randomized at the start of a game, with players having uneven access.

What you are describing with the build order exists also. Many Magic decks have a single game plan ("rush", etc) and can only minimally adapt between games in a match (by swapping cards with a 15-card sideboard). The degree to how uneven a matchup is can vary a lot, and some decks are hybridized so it doesn't just devolve in to rock/paper/scissors

I'd say the number of games like that is not few. 10k in equipment in most sports will give you an advantage over 1k in equipment.

It's more accurate to say that the entry cost into the Vintage format is 10k (or whatever the cost of the deck you want to play). You can't just throw money at the deck and increase its winrate unless your deck starts out suboptimal.

This all seems a little misguided. All standard dice have opposite sides adding up to the same number and are otherwise evenly distributed, so a bias would have to be quite noticeable to skew the results on average.

Dice that tend to roll high/low because of imperfections basically don't exist.

Do people actually use hard mode? Seems like its only "harder" in the sense that it forces you to play less intelligently.

Do you consider hitting enter/return for a newline to be clunky as well? Its generally the same size as caps lock and opposite it on the keyboard. I'd say I press return a bit more often then Esc when using vim, but its close

You find it suspicious that most of the stories that become popular are appealing as stories and are the sort of stories people tend to tell? Is it also suspicious that they are all in English?

I'm sure some of them are fake, but so what? Let people have their plausible mundane lies. Sometimes my girlfriend lies about her name to the Starbucks barista and she hasn't been called out for it yet.

Just as a warning, its a relentlessly horny work. At least in the original series every single female character is sexualized, and two of them are 14 years old. There is at least one instance of "casual" sexual assault. The plot might be great, but it felt pretty gross to watch

This feels like cherry-picking. There are non-neuter ways to refer to kids, including in those languages. Also, the diminutive (at least in German) is neuter, and is often used with children. Some of these terms are specifically neutral (i.e. not "boy" or "girl"). So the reasons are much more likely linguistic than ..sociological.
