Amazing to see privacy not mentioned at all.

I make it a point to Dropbox critical files(non-media) & do monthly backups of my phone & Mac to 2 physical drives. I'd love for something which does this daily of specific folders on my phone & Mac & makes sure there are no duplicates etc. And then on a monthly basis archive them to 2 or more different cloud storage vendors.

This is another timely reminder for everybody to get a simple domain(e.g. Namecheap, now with free whois-privacy as well) & maybe use Zoho mail to manage it for free(IIRC upto 2 in the free-tier). Then forward it to your gmail or whatever. That way you never lose the email address even if something untowardly happens to the forwarded email. I've learnt this the hard way.

I open dropbox manually on my Mac & quit it manually after a file has been synced. I don't see how can they survive any longer except for institutional customers who should be extra careful about surveillance.

They can & already do p2p files & audio/video/data using WebRTC(even Apple got onboard yesterday).

The problem dropbox tries to solve is allowing access to files when either party is not connected to the internet or to grant publicly share a set of files.
