I've run into a similar case. In my case using ESI defeated the whole purpose of the Varnish implementation because the dynamically generated portion of the page had to rebuild the user session and bootstrap the framework, which, while faster than doing it for the entire page, was still not as fast as I would have liked to deliver the content to the browser.

In the end I ended up placing special HTML tags where the ESI tags would have been placed, and then making AJAX calls (on dom ready) to swap out the static content with the dynamic user-specific content.

It worked well for our needs.

This is false. I have personally configured Varnish to power blogs, marketplace websites, and a Magento powered E-commerce store.

If you've worked with Magento then you know it relies heavily on cookies and sessions. Even with all difficulties of modifying Magento I was able configure Magento and Varnish to work together perfectly within a week.

I can point you to the Magento site running with Varnish if you send me an email.

I've been using this utility for a while, no external displays will work under integrated mode. This has caused some confusion for me in the past when I was trying to connect to a projector in a meeting and realized later why the external display was not being picked up.

I did something similar for product matching across a Yahoo! store with products in a Amazon merchant account.

I had a set of products from Yahoo! that needed their equivalent product in a set of products from Amazon. I indexed all the Amazon products into Xapian and let the search functionality do its magic by using the Yahoo product title as the search keyword. It also had a scoring mechanism and worked flawlessly for my needs.

What kind of data are you storing in Riak? And is it write or read heavy usage?

I think the number of connections is more than enough, keep in mind that its concurrent connections. If you're using so many connections where their price seems like a sticking point you should probably roll your own.
