Well this is interesting.

I've been following GraalVM for a long time now and this looks like a very "possible" project.

I must say that I too have come to absolutely hate the chat popups. They're almost always bots and have some pre programmed rubbish responses. They are not "AI" and dont come close to helping me with anything. In fact, I've come to hate it so much that I have a chome extension that makes sure I never see another one! May I add that since that moment, I've had as much help on websites and I dont feel irate with one less thing popping up as I navigate!

They've now whacked a maintenance banner on top ;)

I wish I could code in Python and compile down to run natively like C, or even Go. The more I've used the language, the more it just feels natural, but it's so limited in A.)native compilation and distribution, and B.)multithreading/processing just sucks so bad.

Well this is interesting. I thought I was the only one who noticed things getting slower. For a couple releases now I've been thinking I was going crazy, as if something was only ever getting slower on my own machines. Glad to realise someone else illustrating some data to prove it. Thanks, I'll definitely watch this conversation play out as others realise the obvious..

MacOS and Ubuntu

MacOS for ease of use, great for pretty much most things and feels very nice as I'm a *nix fan. Ubuntu for anything server side, don't hate the desktop experience either.

However, Windows has really come a long way, and with the ever growing view towards WSL, things are looking better there as of late..

You say Amazon doesn't pay for ads, but by them taking the space of the ads others aren't buying, they're losing ad money, which probably equates back to the value of the ad. ?

This must be so devastating. I think this puts a few things in perspective for me, and others. We're here for such a finite amount of time which too can be cut yet shorter.

I've been working from home for years now, so not noticing much of a change.

My biggest change is going grocery shopping, which has gotten a lot harder..

Also it's very "interesting" to see how so many people on Linkedin and the likes making these massive statements of "how to work from home" and trying to profit off "tools and discoveries" they've made to help you wfh more easily.

I mean, it's not that hard. Just wfh. done.

This is the thing to consider. You could play on the fact that you have some reputable clients you've worked with in the geography already.

You are completely right.

I think your point on a balanced life is also crucially important. Being too obsessed with something also shows off badly and had a way of pushing people away from both you and your "business". Nobody like a desperate person, balanced and well rounded people are more attractive.

I remember back in the day (circa 2000) I was all about AMD and all my custom-built machines had this emphasis on AMD chips due to the floating-point calculations be that much faster than Intel's at the time. Intel really wiped the floor with them over the next bunch of years... It will be interesting should AMD have their comeback now :) Oh how the tables turn!

Im afraid that while this seems logical, it's not how the real world actually is. I've known of many heads of departments with rather grand titles and only a very small percentage of them even know the slightest of what goes on below them or why. Heads of IT, software departments and even CIOs that cant even login. In fact, they often move to similar roles in other companies because the new companies believe they must be good to be in that seniority of the current company. When in fact the current company just can't wait for them to go. After a couple of these moves, they have a whole career of senior positions in immpressive companies. I can think of about 10 examples within ftse10 and fortune25 companies right now that I've had the "pleasure" to work with.

I'm still a contractor in tech in London. IR35 is, as you said, a real PITA!

The level of change is just quite dramatic, and the returns are not at all favourable in any comparison.

I have been doing this for a long time now, many many years and have worked on many projects, in many companies. There is definitely a massive benefit of flexible and highly skilled developers for companies that need projects off the ground quickly. I am very interested to see how this single change alters what many companies are able to push out in the UK post April.

While there appear to still be the potential for Outside IR35 contracts, I have many colleagues that are sat on the sidelines already, waiting.
