I switched as well and it's actually such a "pick the lesser evil" situation and I hate that.

I'm gonna write a quick comparison as I've switched between platforms several times (still miss my Windows Phone tbh though):

I've found that no matter which Android "iphone camera killer" phone I got, the camera was unreliable and always ended up having crappy results. Meanwhile, my iPhone pics are constantly a decent quality.

Somehow, iPhone screens _consistently_ shatter for me. Even when I'm careful. I've yet to break the screen on an Android phone -- even if I've used it significantly longer or it was significantly cheaper. Something about iPhone's design or manufacturing lends it to shattering. My current iPhone has a shattered back from when I dropped it on my soft carpet from a foot up-high about a year in...

iPhone and Android software both sucks but Android's app experience is _significantly_ better. Why? BACK BUTTON. Every iPhone app has different expectations around going "back" from swiping up, left, right, or just having no way to go "back" at all. Which is common. Good Android apps are _great_; however, most iPhone apps are ok and most Android apps are not even ok.

iMessage isn't great but it's hard to give up on it. SMS/MMS experience _sucks_ -- so knowing when someone will get your 5 minute audio message in good quality is actually really nice. Sending pictures between platforms _sucks_. With that said, Android's web interface for messages is a million times better than the iMessage app and obv cross-platform.

I also absolutely hate getting data off an iPhone. it's unreliable especially if you don't have a mac. The Android experience is so much nicer.

So it's kind of a give and take. :/

Also -- less notification/customization options on the iPhone but having a hardware "silent" button is rad.

I really like it -- lots of legal documents I've signed over the past few years are in DocuSign. Which also means that I have easy storage for my _own_ documents. If I log in, I can see the lease I signed 3-4 years ago, the contract I signed last year, etc. etc.

Plus, yeah, you get to see if the other party signed, all the appropriate spots for signing are flagged, the entire audit trail of the document.

It's super convenient.

Also, it's cheap AF. A personal account is like $10-15 and a business account is $25-45. That's pocket change for the service you get.

EDIT: I've worked on document management software. Let me tell you that people will pay bank for document management -- without even the signing part. In any field.

I often see the whole product free like this -- and then pricing comes about for collaborative features, cloud storage, cloud processing, etc.

So I'm guessing that's how it'll remain free -- as long as you use your own storage space and computing power, you can see use it for free.

that's pretty much how I feel, too. I really love the flow of hooks and I write a ton of them -- majority of the logic I write tend to end up in hooks and I really love that.

I'm not an audiophile but I am a disabled user which is why I can't buy these. I can't lift up my right arm all the way up so I typically don't use the right-side headphone controls on headphones.

The AirPods Max aren't reversible (idk of any headphones that are?) and the fact that they put the controls all the way up top means that even if I reach over with my left hand, I can't really reach the controls. This absolutely sucks. I love that they're physical buttons but yeah, this sucks.

I have the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones which have some controls on the left (I wish they were configurable) and "touchpad" controls on the right. 90% of the time, the only gesture that works on those using my reach-around method with my left hand is the pause button. That's it. It sucks. I wish it had more physical buttons.

So can someone give me reversible headphones, use those physical buttons that are better than gesture-based touchpads, and make them reversible? I'd really appreciate that :/

Until then, the WH-1000XM4 are at least usable by someone who can't use their right hand to control headphones. The AirPods Max are not.

Totally agree. One of the banks I bank with has a fully interactive JS application with no reloads. It's super smooth to interact with and makes the experience amazing.

I also bank with another bank that does full-page reloads and it's a huge pain. And it's frustrating when I have to do something because of how slow it is comparatively.

Yeah, that's the thing. I used my dock with both my desktop and laptop for months and it worked fine. _Still_ works fine. It's a 100W. If I plug it into my Macbook, it'll run the external display for like 10 seconds and shut it off. It's unfortunate :(

I have the opposite reaction. I wonder what kind of computer/monitor the author is using.

I found that lighter colors (whites/greys/very light pastels) display way better on an Apple-made monitor while darker colors look much better on Thinkpads/Acer/Asus/etc. monitors.

I got into quite a few back-and-forths with designers that only design on Macs because the colors look _way_ different on other devices.

I guess that's where we disagree. I don't think it's been used successfully and by design, meritocracy isn't for the benefit of everyone -- it encourages actions only for the benefit of the power-wielders because they're the ones who judge merit.

No? maybe I misunderstood your comment. Everyone seems to default to "if it's not meritocracy, then what?" or they default to "this meritocracy alternative you're proposing is worse". Well, then, what's better for you? What would you prefer knowing that meritocracy is inherently full of biases?

Meritocracy is full of flaws.

I do believe putting more diverse set of people into power makes a difference. Having racial diversity, gender diversity, cultural diversity, financial diversity etc. is important for having fair and fruitful leadership at companies, in gov't, and whatever other places.

I'd like to invite you to come up with a strategy to counter meritocracy bias to make it "fair" for everyone. What would your strategy be?

so you're saying to avoid biases, we should have a diverse and inclusive set of interviewers that can counter each others' blind spots.

And that meritocracy on its own cannot work because everyone is biased in one way or another. Got it.

it's tragic that people think merit-based promotions and hiring actually exist. Meritocracy is flawed and extremely biased -- because people that enforce meritocracy are biased.

Martin himself shows himself to be a biased person which he shows time and time again on Twitter. What if he were to decide who got promoted or hired for companies?

There are literally studies on this.

There are certain items that are more susceptible:

- kids toys

- any kind of supplements/protein powder/etc.

- cheaper electronics/cables/etc.

I probably spend as much as you -- though in the past year or so, I've been shopping elsewhere.

There are some products that are "safe" to buy and you won't have to worry but there's a ton of stuff that will randomly be counterfeit. -- even prime stuff.

It's also common for me to order something several times -- and then suddenly get a counterfeit product.

I honestly recommend people use eBay instead or BestBuy :) or Newegg or anyone else essentially.

Oh, I agree! There are so many YT creators now that discuss how their videos are demonetized and how it's fucking them over but they're okay because of Patreon support.

Same with me. If I lost my Twitter account, I could rebuild it -- my _actual_ following at the time had more to do with my blog and RSS (miss those days :( ); however, it shows that you can't really trust that an account is yours or that as long as you follow rules, you get to keep using the site. Or that you'll get a "fair trial" when you're accused of breaking rules.

It doesn't help that these companies also punish you for getting accused when they _do_ have manual review. One of my photos on FB got mistakenly flagged, reviewed and approved that it's fine, and I still had a 7-day ban from posting/commenting. Youtube has that 3 strikes rule or whatever where if you get accused 3 times or more of copyright infringement (even if false and retracted), you lose monetization.

Wish I had known about this product. This seems like a really awesome bookmarking service -- better than most I've seen. :(

This is also so terribly common. I had a Twitter account get suspended for 2 months...with no explanation. I appealed it but it still took 2 months. What if that had been my main source of revenue? They restored the account without much explanation.

We really need _real_ people to make decisions like this. Oh it's not scaleable? Then maybe it's not a product you can sustain.

1Q84 subverts Chekhov's Gun in a fantastic way. It partially breaks 4th wall but it also somehow illustrates that real life doesn't abide by Chekhov's Gun.

It's not a mystery per se but it deals with a lot of unknowns and protagonists finding out information that changes their world-view as they go through the story. It's a great trilogy/book.

I think what we'll see in 5 years will be browsers using even more hardware acceleration/GPU acceleration for its rendering -- so it'll be entirely abstracted away from us. Obviously, direct canvas rendering will still be more performant.

I recently found out that Google Sheets uses Canvas for its spreadsheets. That's probably a part of why it's so performant.

That is a good point. We're getting closer to fines that actually hurt the companies enough not to do it again.

The frustrating part is that they kept doing it even after they said they wouldn't. And FB amassed a sizeable revenue breaking a law while snuffing out competition, growing bigger, and reaping the benefits whilst still paying a fine that was essentially "worth it".

I heard in a podcast the idea how the next "Facebook" can't do what FB did to grow -- because all that stuff is now regulated, closely watched, and fined.

You mean that this quarter alone, they made $5B in pure profit? I'm not sure if that helps any argument against what I said.

The problem is that threatening doesn't mean much. The $5b isn't much in the grand scheme of things, and I doubt we'll be as "lucky" to get a judge that feels similarly next time.
