"We're not really taught how to recreate constructively. We need to do more than find diversions; we need to restore and expand ourselves. Our idea of relaxing is all too often to plop down in front of the television set and let its pandering idiocy liquefy our brains. Shutting off the thought process is not rejuvenating; the mind is like a car battery-it recharges by running."

It had a great impact on me and I never had a TV in the living room. I made my kid read this as well. This speech is aging well and is timeless in my opinion.

The Huberman Lab Podcast discusses neuroscience—how our brain and its connections with the organs of our body controls our perceptions, our behaviors, and our health. The podcast also discusses tools for measuring and changing how our nervous system works.

Dr. Andrew Huberman is a tenured Professor of Neurobiology and Ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine. His laboratory studies neural regeneration, neuroplasticity, and brain states such as stress, focus, fear, and optimal performance. For more than 20 years, Dr. Huberman has consistently published original research findings and review articles in top-level peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Cell, Neuron, and Current Biology. He is a regular member of several National Institutes of Health review panels and a Fellow of the McKnight Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts. Dr. Huberman regularly consults for technology development companies, professional athletic organizations, and various units of the United States and Canadian Special Operations. " by making things that genuinely delight its customers." - sure all these mindless, addictive apps, sites like Facebook, Instagram, binge watching on Netflix, time sink like YouTube are all genuinely delighting me, I walk away feeling great about myself.

Glossing over important aspects to either feel good about themselves or to project as do-gooders is not going unnoticed.

I do not want to minimize your experience either, as somebody suffering from chronic pain for the past two years myself. Chronic pain sensitizes you further, having this awareness helps you deal with your condition better. I highly recommend reading the following article.

And as Dave Chappelle says -

Got to find a way to find joy in your existence in spite of that feeling.

Not a zero-sum game, the pie is growing etc are some of the reasons we tell ourselves so that we (the middle class knowledger workers) can sleep at night. I bought 'Winners take all' last year, but finally started reading it recently and finished more than 50%. I would like the commenters to read an author's work before criticizing it, otherwise you are the one who is making assumptions.

I just switched to Safari - to be able to set time limits to websites on my mac, as I am consuming too much news these days. This is not possible with Firefox as far as I know.

“The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads.” –Jeff Hammerbacher

This is the kind of work I would like to see the best minds of my generation to work on.

I am not saying that I am one of the best minds of my generation, but I couldn't work for ad-network companies. I took consulting gigs only when I was trying to gain some big data exposure, and was in that field only for three years over three different occasions.

I would like to see more and more people to stop working for ad-tech companies.

I have been on IF for almost three years and started recently on 36 hours once every three weeks. If you can do 24, 36 is not too much of a problem. My last 12 hours of the 36 hours is sleeping, so I don't think about food or feel hungry when I am sleeping. Also, I ended up doing it for 38-40 even though my intention was to do it for 36 hours because of my sleep.

Yes, I wanted to work for a company that makes a positive impact, but one senior manager tried to get me to settle for a lower compensation saying that firefighters or teachers make way less money than IT professionals. I wanted to ask why the executives get millions of dollars as bonuses and are not the ones to be thankful that their salaries are way more than teachers and firefighters. I didn't ask because I am not confrontational and I know that it doesn't make any difference. With experience, you see that most of the values, context or culture people talk about is lip service.

I haven't read Atomic Habits yet, but I read 'The power of habit' by Charles Duhgig. I think motivational quotes, inspirational stories are overrated and habits are underrated. Inspirational stories are great to make you realize that you too can achieve something, but they stop there, they don't take you any further.

Recently, I stumbled on a website called Focusmate and I think this is going to help me in the long run.

I was disabled for two months following my ankle surgery. I had to be non-weight bearing and was not supposed to let my foot touch the ground. Each simple daily step was ten steps. To change pants, find some place to sit, use the knee scooter to go there, sit and then change pants. Scooting to this sitting spot, usually a couch in my bedroom takes some maneuvering the scooter from a closet. Couldn't take a shower standing, getting into a tub was a big process. Through all this, I gained an appreciation for the permanently disabled people. I haven't recovered completely, but when I am, I want to use that knee scooter at least once a month to count my blessings rather than fretting about trivial things.

I hope not to see any moral policing here for selling out. It is difficult to walk away from that kind of money.

Hope not to see indifference caused by false equivalencies.

False equivalencies suck out oxygen and leave no room for nuances or discussions.

I am encouraging my social network to switch from Whatsapp to Signal, but I'll go cold turkey whether they switch or not.
