I’ve never seen Mother having an easier time. People don’t like admitting when they’re wrong.

This is no different from the lawyers at any large organization telling individual teams not to use a specific vendor. It happens all the time.
Anthropic wants to dictate what the DoD can do with its product. The DoD said that means you’re not fit for purpose. Really not a big deal.
It’s just not reasonable to think the DoD will start doing license audits of individual missions so Anthropic can virtue signal.
My impression is that the vast majority of "savings" was never achieved by promised efficiency gains or elimination of pure waste, but instead simply by cutting projects, i.e. slashing some form of public service or benefit in order to save tax money. Which is obviously inferior.
That doesn’t seem inferior at all. There’s very little to be gained by doing everything the same but with less money; the only way to make an actual difference is to quit doing the stupid shit that’s expensive. That’s what 90% of the world means by efficiency, i.e. don’t do the things that don’t need done.
What are you going on about? US emissions have been going down for the last 10 years: https://www.eia.gov/environment/
Oppose and fear are not synonymous.
> His point is not that black people are less capable but that DEI policies [cause] looser standards These ideas are equivalent…
You’re grossly failing at basic logic here. One case is describing racism and one being racist. Those things are not the same.
They don't believe that there are black people who are qualified…
Again, you’re failing at basic reading comprehension but now it looks intentional.
How come it's the opposite in practice?
It’s not. “In practice” ≈ “your assumption”
I was under the impression that HN is at least as centered on self-promotion as any other social media site.
You don't even have the dopamine hit of counting your content upvotes.
There’s a score displayed at the top right; I’m 100% that some percentage of visitors get a dopamine hit off that.
ICE agents are not generally required to present warrants. The agent has all sorts of conditions where they get to say no. If you think you’re above the law and can tell them what to do then you’re going to be arrested.
I just started looking but I can’t find any supporting evidence for this story. The part where someone says “we both know why you’re here” just sounded like a cheesy movie line. The journalist mentioned that while being detained he met a woman who was on day 4 of detention… what exactly are the logistics of how they were handling detention?
It all just sounded so implausible. It reads like someone trying to spin a story to convince others of what they already wanted to believe, or maybe that kid in grade school who tells stories he read or saw, but swaps himself for the main character.
Why should I believe this person more than any random internet crank?
During war some tariffs essential go to infinity.
The need for inventory decreases at the same rate as the sales throughout, e.g. if it takes twice as long to sell a pair of shoes than you only need to hold half as many.
Did they tell you that?
I wouldn’t describe them as nationalistic or fascist. There’s no need to bring in any sort of political view… the problem is when little people get a little power. It can get ugly.
It’s the same people. There’s always been an element of luck.
I travel a lot and I’ve interacted with a lot of border agents. I’d say luck is important for a lot of countries. I’ve had great experiences flying in US, Egypt, UK and Turkey I’ve also had terrible experiences with US, and Iceland. Most other places have been somewhere in between.
This feels like a great example of crying wolf. In the future I’ll be much less interested in what this author has to say.
We don’t have a way to up and down vote agreement. We can only vote on whether a comment should be displayed. That’s not engagement, it’s a fundamentally different concept.
Why is your ire directed at the US here? Spying on each others citizens is one thing, but the UK is attempting to both prevent the US from having meaningful consumer encryption and destroy trust in US corporations.
I’m a bit shocked that an ostensibly tech site seems fine with the UK trying to destroy consumer encryption globally.
Maybe, but if the settings get you down to the completely targeted level there’s not really any lower value you can go.
I can’t imagine why we wouldn’t allow aliens to release music here. Not sure what form royalties would be in.
I’m not sure what you’re saying here. Farmers certainly didn’t launch satellites or write the software on them, but I don’t think anyone would expect or want that.
Long ago, when I was young though, the first satellite imaging I saw was at my uncles farm. This was dedicated equipment in his home office with a simple UI with ridiculously high res satellite imagery of all the nearby land. This was way beyond anything a PC was capable of at the time. Definitely felt like he was on the bleeding edge.
What is the insight you’re looking for? Or what is the category? Honestly curious what the threshold is and how you think it would exhibit.
Is there any official confirmation of this? A random post on mastodon about a random post on bluesky isn’t really very meaningful.
You don't have to like people to respect them. You don't have to agree with them either.
This is where conversations about pronouns or gender always go off the tracks… If I don’t agree with someone’s concept of gender, you’re saying I don’t respect them. How do you respectfully disagree with and not use someone’s preferred pronouns? You can disagree, but not out loud?
I think you need to double check your assumptions. This isn’t a younger generation vs older generation issue. It’s mostly US (w/ Canada) and mostly a side note in politics.
Ok. Are you suggesting we don’t make any changes based on what we’ve seen? That we don’t analyze what happened?
Of course there are angry individuals and of course leadership should identify areas for improvement. Nothing ever improves unless people are able to take an honest look at failures and shortcomings.
It’s not a subsidy, but a hold back from taxation.
I like pedantry as much as the next person but that feels like a pointless distinction here.
Luckily most people don’t want to live like that. It’s true that people have lost a lot of their ability to socialize, but the kind of hate you’re promoting takes a lot more work. It’s tiring for everyone.
Oh! How thrilling! Do you have any details about how they’re going to do that?
It’s already well documented that he “bent the knee” to Biden, so you can argue about the extent but the pattern is pretty well established.
