... for AI... which people have to convince themselves they 'need'. I am a user, I have a 1m$ rack for my small company for AI, but I have currently 189 racks that cost about 15k one off per rack. And those make us a LOT more money than the AI ones ; most are departmental apps or websites that take very little processing power and are low on everything while people pay nice money to keep them going. Our support is better than the rest; you can just call me or come to my house and we'll do something. Not many clients leave, ever. For the past 30 years. I buy 5-10 year old servers which are complete overkill for 99% of my clients (some are fortune 500 companies but departmental stuff) and they just never leave. Makes vastly more money than AI and we are still cheaper than AWS and the department does not have to get a flexible budget (like they would have to if AWS) with us. We just have the same fixed price + yearly inflation correction and that's it. For 30 years.

They are not stopping either.

This has always been the case , for most companies, but MS is very well known for it. Play along until you have enough market share and then break things in undocumented ways.

I see that when you don’t know what is in there then sure, but we don’t have that issue. No lead or asbestos or fiber glass. Otherwise men in white suits arrive anyway.

we fill anything that needs filling: the ground here is very uneven with massive rocks so you need to fill to even, you can empty containers of crap other people give away or pay a fortune.

I reuse everything from remodels. Seems a shame to throw out always. And other skips are getting bought by others to use in their building projects.

Not sure if this is SQLite or driver/Rails issues? We use it for sites and systems with a lot more (but similar) traffic and have no issues; we did write the drivers we use ourselves (for Node) as we got into much issues with the popular/existing ones.

GrapheneOS and others should have lobbyists or rather lawyers and lawmakers to fight for using secure systems to mandatory be allowed for these. Sure, there must be some type of OS guarantee, but that should not be exclusive to Google and Apple. And indeed browsers with otp/authn devices (not one per service but yubi/thetis type of thing as those can be made sovereign for a large part); when an OS is not allowed, the browser and app should be mandatory allowed with such a device as that is, actually, more secure than the original device as it is an external encryption and encryption key source the hacker cannot reach.

I did not say there is no market, but I am willing to bet whatever that the majority of your client base would be much cheaper off with a simple setup where they can scale the entirety of their company’s existence with one machine. Not even a large one. This cloud stuff has its place but not for most. For them it’s either themselves overspending or wasting VC money.

I have been in business for 30 years. That helps. We don't overgrow or over hype and we discourage people who just want to overload things; we like boring companies with a lot of revenue / profit that run boring things like ERP, CRM, dashboards, LoB apps etc. And those companies just keep buying ; especially Vibe LoBbing makes for departments within companies churning out tons of apps they need to host somewhere.

Well, they are selling this thing so they don't want you to buy a big server (with a read replica) as that's much cheaper.

I love hosting and I will never stop doing it. I keep buying servers (second hand; almost no one actually needs the latest) and hosting 1000s of companies.

I like but for many of my regular destinations you are still 2-3x more expensive than what I can trivially find myself, especially longer visiting times and more data.

but can you? You cannot do a Postgres clone yourself and the Postgres arch makes it rather impossible to just rip out stuff and replace it. So how would I do this. Even with SQLite and me being a very experienced (40 years) c embedded coder; having AI rewrite it to the architecture I would want it to be and then changing things for fun is a better tutor than whatever I could have done with the original in a shorter time.

I am also in rural EU and have 1 house that has fiber, and another, 10 minute drive away has nothing, not even cell signal and it won't get anything any time soon. Starlink is basically the only option.

Is it not comparable in this case? Two western rich nations being undemocratic. At least in the EU there is voting (pointless in this case, but often effective); the US dude just does whatever he wants while the people are against it (ratings and wars which were promised would not happen etc).

It's not just a rewrite ; it has improvements. I did the same thing for fun for the same reason; I wanted to see if I can improvements on some of the legacy design stuff and, especially, the stuff PG people have told us that it cannot be done differently. It can. I would not put it in production, but it thought me a lot about the internals of databases. To keep my brain happy in the age of LLMs, I implement database things on our (also old but many times refactored/rewritten) production db without an LLM. I'm sweating through Flexible Paxos now; probably we will just keep using raft as it's old and stable and simple but it's interesting anyway.

The issues here are the same as they have been forever in every country; Spanish people simply are not going to do the jobs the immigrants are doing. This is the same in every country I lived in or visited, including the US. In Spain, most my uneducated neighbours feel too high to even work in bars, let alone pick fruit, shovel shit, pick up garbage etc. So who is going to do that besides immigrants who are eager to do it; a few generations later, they will vote right and complain about immigrants and will say they are too good to shovel shit, of course.

I would try it but it goes to opus 4.8 for all we do and so we stopped trying. Our work is not focused on security but obviously, as everything has to, it needs to be audit security. And that will have it change the model.

We have been doing this for years now: it is great. We build our products faster and better and we get more money for fixing products vibecoded by others. More money in every way.
