OK, the "everything is made of a million dots" rendering style is pretty neat. I don't think I've seen its kind before. I also like that it somehow ran perfectly on my phone.

IMO interactive in-world music peaked with Portal 2, the effort put into that was impressive.

It's an R Markdown notebook. I've been finding these to be a nice evolution on the literate programming concept. I also noticed the author has been responding in this thread but her account seems to have been immediately shadowbanned upon creation, seems to be a common issue recently.

Looks like the color is simply normalized so that one of the values is at maximum (255) and the others follow the shape of the spectrum. It's all very theoretical. If you're talking about what's physically possible, then you could just stop at "infinite temperature" instead of going into eye cones. Maybe if a body's temperature approaches infinity, you could get this color by standing at a sufficient distance, or wearing adequate sunglasses with uniform attenuation, or doing the correct safety squint like we do at the workshop.

Assuming this is for websites, what's the recommended way of handling cache busting with this kind of setup? The article has a slightly awkward paragraph that tells you to set long TTLs for everything and concludes with "tweak these settings", which kind of sounds like "draw the rest of the owl". Might be a good reason to use something that integrates all this (eg. Cloudflare Pages, since you're already using Cloudflare).

This is a fun exploration, though there's a lot of fuzzy usage of terms and missing stuff. Eg. the first 5 paragraphs are apparently trying to define timbre, yet the word appears nowhere. Same with harmonics, etc.

I think one of the most interesting things about pitch is that it's not well defined, it's a psychological phenomenon. If you could extract it from people's brains, you would likely get different values from different people. This is compounded by the fact that harmonics produced by real instruments are not exact ratios of each other, yet they affect the perceived pitch.

I like when people bring up Myers Briggs because it allows me quickly categorize them as "people who attach importance to personality types", and thereby make sweeping generalizations about them.

Is it? A quick look at the Mastodon / Twitter links at the bottom of the article should make it clear the author is (rightfully) proud of his butt. I suppose that won't prevent the rest of HN from getting offended, so maybe it's somewhat inappropriate. But not wholly.

We're using vague terms, but the point is that controlling the VM is not the same thing as controlling the VM's traffic, especially in the model where your OS is not actually hosting the VM (since Hyper-V is a type 1 hypervisor).

This is due to Hyper-V, which is being rolled out on Windows 10 and required for WSL2. The OS is now running as a VM, and virtualized programs like WSL2 are running alongside - these VMs can't control each other's traffic. It's interesting that a feature meant to improve sandboxing actually makes firewalling and VPN more difficult, in its current state. I think the the proper fix is at the Hyper-V level, which might need to explicitly manage firewall and VPN features.

I saw El ángel exterminador and it was great, but I don't think it hints at any simulation. The phenomenon does not really need any literal explanation, but if I had to provide one, I would rather suggest a mystical occurrence or entity such as the "angel" hinted by the title, somehow triggered by the characters, and the seating solution may be a way of telling the humans to stay in their place.

The article states that all the pictures required posing due to long exposure time, so I don't think "hand held" was an option. That being said, if you're gonna pose, you can just pose longer when it's cloudy.

Few people would, that's not the point. It seems you are not understanding this part: "shift from large-scale to small-scale extraction". The claim is that cocaine would partly shift to "at home" and local production, which GP correctly points out is currently very common with DMT. The comparison is made because DMT currently has a similar legal situation to what GP suggests for cocaine: legal plant material, but the purified/extracted substance is illegal.

It's a very awkward thread where Lucky225 accidentally demonstrates that he has indeed taken over Adrian Lamo's email account. Note this doesn't say anything about whether they were or weren't friends. They definitely had overlapping interests.

I think you're oversimplifying the problem here, which may be in great part institutional.

Sure, open source TTS seems to be lagging behind recent commercial offerings, but pharmaceutical research is actually an excellent example of a field with massive FOSS software usage. TTS is also "purely virtual" which makes it significantly different, and I would say significantly more approachable to open source collaboration.

This is not legal advice but I do have some experience with sample banks. In the absence of more information, I would approach the exported samples as if you were using them from Sonuscore directly. The license for that is here:

If you read that license, you'll notice that the featured website does not appear to really comply with the license of the samples they're using. Like most sample banks licences, it specifically disallows redistributing the raw samples. That is, unless they got a special license.

I felt like this part could use some fleshing out. I'm pretty sure that the egg does not lose its strength because it "loses its curvature", tough I must admit I'd be hard pressed to provide a more precise explanation. I would say it has more to do with the "hand wrap" spreading out the force over a wide area, so that the egg's curvature causes the hand's force to work against itself. But a small discontinuity creates a focus point where the force will be localized, causing successively more breakage in the shell.

To be fair, it's exactly what the title should lead you to expect.

I experienced an "interesting" glitch where the world appeared to rapidly switch back and forth between two diverging states. Almost as if two different servers were continuously updating me with their different opinions of what's going on.

Some playing tips:

- Never keep any controls pressed down. Consider each single keypress as a discrete action that consumes energy. The more conservative you are with keypresses, the more energy you keep.

- Because it's busy, you have to accelerate right after spawning, otherwise you're in the hellzone and people will actually spawn inside you, causing instant death.

- The down arrow will brake/stop your ship, no matter which direction you're pointing. This is handy when you approach the edge of the map.

- Try cruising along the edge of the map at a leisurely pace, avoid the center, and pwn slowly.
