Yep, seems like the big expectation here is to retain jobs and keep a competitive market in Australian domestic travel. Doesn’t seem likely anymore, which is a shame, because I always liked flying Virgin over the cattle-mustering experience that was flying Jetstar.

I just realised we just spent more on 5 days for a holiday rental over Christmas than this family received for selling 2 kidneys to try and escape their debt. It’s crushing to read stories like these. Surely there must be some sort of structural reform possible to “the way the world works” to prevent this absurd imbalance.
Interesting interpretation of the data. It would proably lead to the same conclusion though, that teachers are being rewarded for having naturally smarter/more developed students rather than their own performance.

Having the booster survive the re-entry heating and aerodynamic loads while only using passive methods to slow it is the hard bit.

It's not really 1 x ten year project as such, but heaps of smaller 3-6 month projects (many running in parallel) to add chunks of new functionality (as microservices) and rewrite parts of the monolith that we can cleanly cleave off.
New parts of UI that are needed don't get added to the Delphi app, but get built as web pages (using React mostly at the moment), which get launched in Chrome windows from the Delphi application.
One day our Delphi app will be an empty shell of it's former self and we can have a huge decommissioning ceremony (party!), but that day's still a long way off... :)
We're in the process of migrating off a 4+ million line Delphi application that basically runs the whole business, but it's a 10+ year project to "grind the monolith", so who knows when we'll actually be done. In the meantime, we don't have much choice but to keep paying the licensing costs...

I'd posit that anyone characterizing this as an apocalypse story hasn't actually read the article.
To be fair, that's only a very small part of his rebuttal, dealing specifically with the period prior to 1970, as well as the fact that GDP estimates for this period "take little if any account of the goods and resources that people may have acquired from their land, from trees, from forests, from rivers and the sea, and in the form of gifts from relatives."
From 1981 onward, I would summarize his argument as being that:
- While some measures have improved, the picture is no where near as good as it is represented.
- Using $1.90 as the baseline to beat is too low for what we would consider as being out of poverty.
- Most economic successes have not been due to neoliberal markets but rather state-led industrial policy, protectionism and regulation.
- Most quality of life improvements have not been due to neoliberal globalization but simple public interventions including free healthcare and education.
- Progress is slowing relative to the resources available to tackle the problem.
The title is a play on the old saying "Those who can't do, teach".
Whether this is actually the case or not is debatable.
It's not the gross population that's the problem, it the rate of growth in population and the infrastructure that's required to support it.
The basic problem is that if infrastructure last 50 years, you have to replace 2% of it every year. Now, for every 1% of population growth, you also have to (on average) also build 1% more infrastructure, so you need to build 3% in total, or 50% more than if you had no population growth. But you only have 1% more revenue to build it with, so inevitably only a fraction of what you need gets built, hence the problems. And the higher the population growth, the worse the problems.
In C the interviewer is also spending time reviewing the assignment. Maybe not the same amount, but if you also have a handful of your current devs review it and give their feedback, the company time spent on it might not be trivial.
Also there is usually more than one person sitting with the interviewee when they come in, so the company time spent is multiplied at that stage.

It doesn't accelerate the air like a typical air breathing engine, but it certainly ingests the air like one. It's basically a ramjet but uses electric charge to accelerate the exhaust gas rather than hydrocarbons.

Companies built on slow painful progress inevitably have a broad customer base, customers that were acquired through slow painful progress (although they probably have a few whales still). They're less likely to have the loss of one deal/customer sink the whole ship.
7 cents per employee per month isn't exactly a generous discount either. Even if your chat is down for half the work day (4 hours), you're looking at $3.55.
I mean, it's better than nothing, but let's not pretend it's compensation for lost productivity either.
The common procedure I was taught when growing up was chilling the crayfish (stick it in the freezer until it goes to sleep) before killing it [1]. It really takes very little effort and make no discernible difference whatsoever to the end result.
It's interesting that this method wasn't one of those listed, because I was under the impression that it was quite effective.

I noticed on the top right screen when landing the 2 outside boosters that they did a 3 engine landing burn. Previously they'd only done this over the water, but considering that the last one went well on 31 Jan, perhaps they also tried a 3 engine landing burn over the drone ship this time and something went wrong.
Just speculation, but it makes sense to me...
Absolutely, its compressive strength (~1 MPa) is so low that it's better to think of it as rigid insulation that anything structural or load bearing.
I came across a nice video/presentation from some guys at SpaceX on using GPUs to model and visualise the fluid flows inside rocket engines (specifically the Raptor engine) and around spacecraft during reentry, as well as a good explanation of how they do it efficiently using adaptive grids. Their explanations are quite approachable as well.
I'm skeptical that Google divides its revenue and investment up in this way and that more search ad revenue allows Google to invest more in search.
I'm sure that Google is already investing the amount they need to in search to make it as profitable as possible.
It seems that more search ad revenue allows Google to bank roll the rest of the Google/Alphabet behemoth on projects unrelated to search, but within its mission to "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" ie. to know everything about everything, which I'm sure tracking plays a role in.
It's not comparable to concrete though as it has completely different physical properties (ie. much lighter and weaker). It's more rigid insulation made with natural fiber and a lime based binder to hold it together.
