I wish tools like this would account for equity.

Base salary in the Bay area has never been particularly high compared to comparable cities, but in my admittedly anecdotal experience, The Bay Area has the highest equity compensation of anywhere in the US.

Oh wow it's increasing fast. When I started Soft Eng in 2008 it was like $5000. At graduation it was $6500. This is nuts.

Actually chat heads works on stock Android! Not sure the exact wizardry that went into implementing it, but it's very impressive to use.

I'd like to clarify one thing. The "native" Android app that was tested, isn't actually native. Native newsfeed shipped in Facebook for Android 2.0, but 1.9.2 was used in the comparison. Thus, the comparison was between two html5 implementations of newsfeed. That said, I'd love to see a side by side video with Facebook for Android 2.0.

What effect this will have on HTTPS (and therefore all HTTP 2.0) handshake latency?

APMs are definitely a clique while they work for Google, but after they leave they are just a network of friends and contacts. I think this article is overplaying their loyalty to Marissa. Nobody I've ever met thought Yahoo would be a good place to work and I doubt that will change much in the near future.

This is correct. However, the Android team made their decision with the assumption that Android would power keyboard and trackball devices. That was never the case, so they made the wrong decision based on a faulty premise.

Hello, I'm the author of this article. I do not have a degree in electrical or computer engineering. I'm merely stating the trends I've seen in the PC industry over the last few years.

I am, however, a Software Engineer. I know that most of the perceived lag on a modern desktop is not due to the CPU, but inefficient I/O to the hard disk or network. One must only look at the iPad 2 too see that's very possible to make a fast computer with beautiful 60 FPS animations and snappy applications using only an 800 MHZ dual core ARM CPU. Ironically, my iPad feels way faster than my Macbook Pro most of the time.

You don't need to be an expert in the microprocessor industry to know that the CPU performance race is over. It's all about power consumption now, and X86 fails miserably at lower power computing. Unless you know something I don't.

Yeah I agree about Google making you feel like crap. Another thing, they don't pay for the relocation flight or provide corporate housing, so before my first internship with Google I was pretty bummed out by the whole process, but after actually working there I can't wait to get back.

Unfortunately, this has happened to many friends of mine. I much prefer the way Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and Zynga do their recruiting. However, if Google actually does accept you, it's a steller experience.

Soft engs are generally better. Velocity is full of them. The one problem with Soft Engs is that their work load is generally higher than CS students, so less time to work on startups.
