It's a smart move for Google to leverage their huge captive audience on YouTube to drive adoption. With Amazon's similar position with AWS and Twitch I'd be surprised if we didn't see a similar offering from them.

Check out Apteligent, better crash reporting as well as performance data, user behavior and business impact. As a bonus your data doesnt go into Twitter or Google's ad networks and it's COPPA compliant.

We decided to build our own dashboard since Google's is updated only about once a month. It also doesn't include data from non Google Play devices:

We just analyzed Android manufacturers [1] and found they tend to update in two groups: 3 months after release (Motorola, LG, HTC) and 6 months after release (Samsung, Sony, Huawei). This of course ignores Nexus devices by those manufacturers.

I'm the co-founder of Apteligent. David, I'm surprised you would describe our solution as "high level passive analytics" unless you haven't tried it yourself.

I would say the difference is our deep focus on mobile user experience vs Sentry's focus on cross platform error reporting. To understand your users this also means you need more data than just crash. For example: app load times, network data, UI latency, etc.

To be clear, there is still fragmentation among devices, this shows that 93% of usage occurs on 3 operating systems vs on iOS where 2 operating systems have 97% of usage. The gap has closed significantly.

Funny enough when our company first launched we had two products: crash reporting and an in-app support forum (competitive to UserVoice!). We quickly realized our core competency was on the mobile performance monitoring side and decided to open up our platform on the support side.

I mention this in the article, but I want to re-emphasize how the approval time is a huge factor. We've had Android developers submit fixes the same day they've discovered a bug on our platform, while iOS devs wait in the queue. You could argue this allows buggier apps to be submitted in the first place, but this sample is taken from devs who use our service and obviously care about producing high quality apps.

(To be fair the iOS approval process has sped up considerably, even with the number of submissions growing)

This is a great program, I did it concurrently with YC s09. They're not really an incubator - John, who runs the program, wants to give smart grads the freedom to get a taste of what its like to be an entrepreneur. Several partners act as mentors but its really about giving you the space and money for a summer to see if you can make something happen.

What do they get? They get to know really smart entrepreneurs at the beginning of their career. I highly recommend you apply.

I used to work at HP -- it was a very depressing work environment. As the article mentions, Hurd was absolutely despised and his "cost cutting" was very much ridiculous. The employees were left with nothing, salaries/jobs were cut, even seemingly cheap luxuries like tea and water. We moved buildings twice during my tenure there, each time to a smaller workspace.

As an outsider before I joined, I can say its reputation far exceeds reality. Leaving for YC was a no-brainer. On a sidenote it seems the only ones left are the "lifers," all of the younger engineers have moved on. Short the stock.
