Melbourne, Australia needs to be on your list.

Pros: Most livable city in the world. Great startup scene. Phenomenal transportation options. Great universities. Fantastic street art everywhere. Amazing food. USD vs. AUD is quite good for USD right now so it is pretty affordable.

Cons: Internet not blazing fast. Beaches elsewhere in Australia are much better (it is on a bay = no waves).

I found it to be amazingly expensive (I was there in 2013) but a phenomenal place to explore. Made amazing friends and loved the city but don't miss the $44 burritos.

Also note http://forage.co which is more of recreating the famous restaurant dishes (they do all the lengthy prep and then ship it to you to do the final prep).

Unsure of if you are looking for a peer group to help you through the highs and lows or a PR plan (accelerator graduates rarely have a huge splash, it is all about habits formed and community support).

The project can be funded but if he used a wrong cc # or expired the funds won't transfer, even though the project was 'funded.'

I don't think he would be liable for KS and Amazon fees for that as they are paid instantly when the transfer happens.

As a designer I found this is the magic work equation:

1) Find a project 2) Finish project on time and budget exceeding expectations 3) Wait for client to send you referrals

Repeat steps 1-3.

And if everyone uses it, there will be lines. Of hungry people.

When I freelanced I got 100% of my work from referrals. My simple marketing strategy was to:

Finish every project on time. Finish every project on budget. Answer all email within an hour (sent during the day).

When you do that, your clients love you and talk about you.

Start with a low hourly rate. When you reach 40 hours booked every week, double your rate. You will loose about half of your clients, but still be making the same amount. If you are good, you will fill it up again. Double it again. Continue with your comfort level.

Having a great time with the book, sorry if I came off as whining.

A few notes. A high % of the KS money went into rewards (books printed averaged $20 shipped).

I did make 3x though Amazon, but if I had gone through gumroad, I would have done double the revenue.

Biggest tl;dr complaint is that as an avid reader of about a book a week I had no idea that authors paid both 30% of the total price plus the delivery fee. The other main competitors don't do this... just found it odd and wrote about it.
