I'm just right now in a slightly similar position. We have more than 20 companies ready to sign big contracts, but it is impossible to raise any money for company structure.

Several customers and employees have expressed their confidence in me personally.

But with this company's attitude, it is impossible to go any further. After more than a month of struggles on what needed to be the next step, I decided to move on from the project: too many risks for the company composition.

So think twice about it. I know it is a tough situation.

This is why the project handle all data locally only.

Adding an opt-in for telemetry is largely used in App that handle high sensitive data, like VScode and Insomnia API are handling them. The only data to be collected is when the App is active and when the app is inactive.

But I understand tour point of view

Having a feedback button that launches a plain old mailto: link might be a good balance to provide an additional mechanism to learn about users' pain points.

This could be a great addiction to the Issues mechanism of GitHub. We've already added a preformat way to open an issue with Leapp directly from the app. But I don't know if this is enough

I don't want to see the post just from the PostHog side, which is biased by definition.

VSCode and Insomnia(https://github.com/Kong/insomnia/pull/5416) taken as electron-based App examples are doing the same with an opt-out telemetry.

As said by them: "Visual Studio Code collects telemetry data, which is used to help understand how to improve the product. For example, this usage data helps to debug issues, such as slow start-up times, and to prioritize new features"

I agree.

Tracking is bad. But having a telemetry on the usage can drastically improve the solidity of an OSS project, especially if the usage is growing vertically.

What are your advice to have a good content?

A few suggestion: - start with a password manager (I will suggest https://1password.com). For any service outside the cloud this should be fine

- Where possible enable SSO, even for AWS or other cloud services (https://blog.leapp.cloud/how-to-saml-federate-your-aws-accou...). Here an example on how to do it with GSuite and aws

- For all your employees I can advice you Leapp as open-source project (https://github.com/Noovolari/leapp). It solve mayor of the problem listed here:

. Responsable for the AWS infrastructure get the IAM Security standard on track (short-lived credentials, MFA, IAM Users secured, rotation of credentials and access to the console with a set of secured credentials, and generation of Azure ceredentials)

. temporary tokens are mandatory, so let a project like leapp locally manage IAC credentials for you.

- Is not too strictly to manage pipelines only after confirmation? You can create a specific role for managing a specific policy to deploy your pipelines. Here an article on how to start organizing your AWS account as a startup (https://blog.leapp.cloud/aws-multi-account-strategy-explaine...)

- "People work on their own devices.": that's why Leapp has been created, check it out.

- Optional: "It would be good if developers get credentials to setup small test environments in AWS." how anout creating a sandbox account for them? - "Bonus: How to manage non-technical secrets" even here, Leapp is a desktop app and is vastly used also for accessing to EC2 instances even for not technical people

Hi HN, My name is Andrea Cavagna, and I posted Leapp a few months ago on HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27688062) as an app for generating credentials in the Cloud for Developers. After gathering feedback from the community, we found the best use case for the tool was to access the Cloud in each method.

I'm proud to share this next iteration as a tool to access Multiple AWS Web console Browser sessions from DIFFERENT ACCOUNT in the same browser window.

We created a Chromium extension (https://docs.leapp.cloud/0.16.2/built-in-features/multi-cons...) and Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/addon/leapp-multi-cons...).

The Extension enables the Desktop App to work with the Extension to use an Isolated Context (aka Containers for Firefox) for each session only by doing (CMD + click) from a Desktop Session.

Before quitting think about having a Business plan and a correct Business model canvas, think about how to monetize your project.

Maybe the project can have an OSS target, and a $$ target on the enterprise solution.

How much do you think to do with support with your project? those kind of questiona are the starting point whenever you want to create a business from your OSS passion

I'm still kind of new in Community managing in open-source and I'm about to choose if is the right moment to switch to a full time evangelism and community management into the open-source project

At the moment I'm struggling with my founder role and accountabilities inside the project.

I've switched from a DevOps position to become the Product Owner, managing the delivery of the open-source project and the day to day work, but now I see lack of time in developing a real evangelism and DevRel things inside the Leapp project.

I'm completely aware that this is THE crucial part of an open-source project and I really love OSS because of the contributing from all around the world.

But is turning that maintain and grow a community around the project, make the project well known, is a full time job for a founder of a project.

I still don't know if I have the right skill for that kind of job and where a such particular job can bring me in the future, together with the Noovolari company.

This is the right target to hit, I think I've met the first two point but, there is still many things to do.

Now I only have to upgrade my copywriting skills to pass better the message.

What I noticed is, since the project is an open-source App, that is way easier to show the App in person instead of writing about it.

Eventually, you'll need to build a playbook that another DevRel or Marketing person can execute, but you can't outsource this when you're still finding product-market fit.

I think this is the main point, I have many and many pages to create a playbook, but, since the project still finding product-market fit, this is a skill that have to come from the founders.

Maybe outsourcing Marketing things such as analytics and so on, but doing DevRel and evangelism on your own.

the experience with my project (https://github.com/Noovolari/leapp) is that if someone know the project it become an habit. And users tends to do WOM to other devs. But how to accelerate this project in a pandemic world, without the ability to partecipate to events in person?
