As usual, when moats are deep enough, prices raise. I think this is basic economics that governs all such businesses. Github feels they have entrenched themselves enough that they can increase prices by segmenting the market differently, which is probably true.
Naturally this opens up space for competition which will figure out how to take a bite here and there. But that will take quite some years.

Well Zemanta tries to help the author instead of reader. That might sound like a small difference, but it actually is a huge shift - author is a human filter and things that the end reader see are not computer-recommendations, but human selected ones.
From what I've seen - a lot. You can lose a leading client (or cause huge bump on the road), your marketing plan can fall apart.
It's about finishing stuff today, so tomorrow you can do more important strategical stuff.
Start-up contrary to some of beliefs is not one big effort to reach the summit. It's a series of small wins (and loses) that accumulate. And you need to be accumulating them faster than your money runs out or competition takes the space, etc.
Being constantly overworked is not sustainable.
However start-up life does include periods of overwork to get things done. Things that you could put off for a couple of days if you had a regular job.
Yes, academics too. Also I am seeing lots of very loud enterprise software people around those standards. Yes, those are very small enterprise software companies.
Yes, this is sad. And it happens all the time.
Exactly the same thing happened to the whole Semantic Web effort at W3C. It basically got overtaken by enterprise and now it is of little interest or use to regular web developers.
They are not created in any persistent way. They are entirely ephemeral to that specific request.
What's expensive is the analysis of the original text, not creation of the objects. If you want to do what you are saying you would need to create and store objects server side in order not to have to re-do the analysis the second time around. There's no point in that.
It's not just one additional line of code. It is additional work every time you try to view result in the browser. Which you basically can't because you can't put accept header in url bar..
At least in python, making requests becomes quite a few more lines of code if you want to add headers. There's usually a short-hand command if you just want to get full data from an url and a "create-an-object, then set these parameters, then this, then open a connection then read what's there".
Mandatory headers are just a way to make life of a regular developer painful.
exactly! All use of headers in web APIs just makes it harder to understand them by regular developers of API cleints.
While in theory great Accepts are just additional burden for web developers. We don't want to need to deal with headers. We want to fetch an url and get _the_same_data_ no matter if the url was entered in the browser, wget, or inside the app we're writing.
For a simple developer, output format is just another parameter and it shouldn't be hidden in HTTP stack.
