Actually the port to Quest 2 Browser was fairly straightforward. Mostly there seems to be some slight differences with event handling. Needed to condition react code on contents of navigator.userAgent and thus specialize for Quest 2 browser. Otherwise easy.

has anyone seen a natural language interface to track ones carbon footprint? I developed the one in the link. I am wondering if similar work has been done in the quantified self area. I use this system everyday and it works for me at least.

I agree with you 100% and am willing to take the down votes. This is extremely obnoxious and I would think that LinkedIn is afraid that people will leave the site in droves if this is allowed to continue...

Is wealth/poverty relative or absolute?

I think most people would be happier if they saw it in more absolute terms. I have witnessed wealthy people made to feel like paupers when a yet more wealthy person puts on a display that they can't afford. The phenomena is actually quite comical.

Still it's fairly clear that wealth will always be a measuring stick that people will use to display their relative worth. It's like plumage. A lot of resources go into growing those fancy tail feathers. In itself I don't see anything wrong with that. It's quite natural.

However it's important for societal cohesion that the absolute wealth of the average does not fall and that they can maintain some semblance of dignity.

It's a long story, but the short of it is that circumstances forced me to follow option #2. I have open sourced the system. It's under BSD and in LISP.

I have not been so involved in c-phrase lately, but that is about to change in the new year -- I will have a reduced teaching commitment. :-)

Any ways I revised the installation guide recently and was wondering if any one could verify that they are able to install the system. Any questions or feedback on the system/code/design would be greatly appreciated.

I used to know Jim Buckmaster, the CEO of CL back in the day in Ann Arbor. He dated my sister for several years.

Any ways Jim is a really smart and together guy, and I would suspect in his heart that he takes a pretty dim view of people who shop for sex. At the same time I know him to be a person of principle and I suspect those principles are some type of Chomskyan libertarianism. BTW I wonder what Chomsky would say w.r.t. this controversy.

Clearly you have two opposing principles. One is free speech, the other is something that most feel is inherently exploitative and should be minimized.

Any ways, I suspect that CL gets more heat because they go against the grain of common corporate culture. Like I said, Jim is a man of principle.

Certainly there are cases such as you describe. But when I am working on a team, I would prefer not to do so with 'four hour work week' types. I know a loafer when I see one. ;-)

What would you fellow workers say about you? I have worked with people doing the 4 hour work week and honestly I can't say I was impressed. Kills the morale around the office when you work with loafers...

Look I will be direct. Do you have an advisor yet? Is there anyone who you want to work with at the institution? Is it politically possible for you to switch to work under that person. If you can't name anyone at your institution, then is there anyone anywhere? If so, then you need to get there.

Getting a Ph.D. is a mentoring process. And you need to find someone who is the right fit. And then you need to become a world expert in a very specific area. That is how it goes...

Students often express a vague interest in LISP when I teach AI. It would indeed be nice to have an extra book to loan out.

Still I remember being so envious of the dog. I was forced to walk a mile through the snow/rain at 7 am and the dog just got to curl up next to the radiator. It's amazing that I was able to get up so early for so long.

yes it does... Natural language interfaces are a very hard area. Lots of failed attempts (e.g. MS EnglishQuery). This in fact is what attracted me to the area. If as a researcher I can help make NLIs more robust/usable, then that would be a 'result'.

Actually that is an approximate figure and includes test routines, comments, etc. Plus what is a line of lisp code? A large amount of code is to support non-linguist authoring of the interface. So in fact I was able to patch the system for "shortest river" and "mean" in a jiffy.

Yes that's what I will probably do. I toned down Anaphoric's web-site and will work with this system from more of a research perspective. I will try my best to avoid open sourcing it, but in the end circumstances may compel that move...

OK, yes, someone's query busted the system down. But it's up again now.

Yes I am at that point... The problem is that I am now finally getting reasonable academic success. A lot of people want to collaborate on papers, projects, etc. And I must say these are some of the best researchers in the field. The only thing I am certain of is that I will be working on this NLI problems for many years to come. The question is which side of the fence will I land on. I can not keep riding the fence for much longer ... or, who knows, maybe I can ;-)

Yes. These are exactly the kind of questions that the system can support. There is a big baseball database out there that I played around with earlier (http://baseball1.com/). It's only for non-commercial activities the last I checked.

Unfortunately sabbaticals aren't part of the Swedish system... Still I am sure I could swing a non-paid leave starting in January or so. Perhaps even in November. But not in September/October! I am already down for teaching AI.

A serious problem I have however is that this geography database isn't so interesting. Who is really going to learn anything from this rather low quality database? What I am looking for is some database that is: 1.) complex enough to preclude standard forms interfaces and 2.) contains information worth asking about. Not an easy task to identify, obtain such data sources.

If I do option #2, that is open-source the system under BSD, then I suppose that would give me the option to fork the whole system later under a commercial license if the system started to gain traction. Of course the risk is that others would build up from the earlier version and essentially lock me out. However I would be pleased to have made such an impact...

The system calls several GPL based components (SPASS, aspell, ...) but does not extend any thing under GPL.

I was thinking that if I open-source it I would put it under a very open license (e.g. BSD) and assume/hope that anyone that extended it would make contact with me for help/advice.
