I damaged an embedded development board by walking across a carpeted room before touching it. When I touched it I heard, felt, and saw the zap and one of the IO ports was stuck after that.
I don't think it's that strange. Most people are happy to have their views supported even if it's by means that they would call terrible if used against them.
I have pasteurized milk straight from a cow in different ways and it is different than raw milk. I prefer the flavored of the pasteurized, but all of them are much better than regular whole milk from the store. Store milk is just more bland in every way, and not just because it's less fatty.
The flavor of milk changes with what the cow eats, so if cows are on pasture then the flavor will change over the year as the grasses change and if they are on hay for part of the year that obviously changes the flavor as well.
Just because spending is rising doesn't mean people are buying more things. Prices have increased, so people can be buying fewer goods and still spending more.
This is not directly relevant, but Power ISA 3.1 (from May 2020) has 128 bit division operations (vdivuq and vdivsq) with a maximum latency of 61 cycles. I don't have access to a Power 10 machine to see how it compares to what's presented here, but I thought it was an interesting addition to the ISA.
Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of changes made to his books to update them for more modern audiences? His books were the first I heard of being updated for that reason and I'd like to see what was done, but I can only find news articles listing some changes.
I'm in the US and this is what I hear from the people I know.
Most of those people don't carefully track their expenses so they just know that they have less left over after paying for the necessities. A couple of them do track expenses carefully and when I was talking to them a few months ago they said that their personal inflation rates were at least 20% over the previous 12 months. I just checked heating fuel costs and they're up 36% from last year, which is less than I expected given what other people have said about their costs but it's still significant. It's definitely going to be a hard winter for a lot of people I know.
The 10% includes food and energy items, but also things that people won't be spending money on when the price of food an energy goes up so it underestimates the impact of an increase in the price of food and energy.
This works much better on my POWER9 system. I have two CPUs in my machine with the same core count but different cache configurations according to hwloc and this showed that they really are different.
I only used it at one company, but it was the most unreliable and hard to diagnose piece of our infrastructure. We didn't even have high throughput and I wouldn't use it again without a really good reason.
