I agree with the .ch comment, I was really just highlighting that sharing it with people has never been an issue.

Regarding the validation point, not so much anymore but during 2015 - 2020 you'd be surprised.

I brought a .ch (swiss, worked for my name) domain and have only ever had a small handful of bad sites that "validate" via checking for .com.

I would say if you're going to make it a lifetime domain then perhaps something that works in a personal and professional setting might be worth considering.

ThinkPads every day of the week. I have a T430 that I have owned for about 6 years and a new P52 which is my daily work machine. Both running Linux with zero issues.

I liked the comment below describing Hotels (Mac) Vs home (ThinkPads). It's true that if you can be bothered to tweak and install some stuff then you end up with something of your own. Your way.

Never used Macs as old enough to remember the "no one got sacked for buying IBM" saying and it's true even if it is now Lenovo.

I dumped meat and dairy as I was also finding the more of that I ate the more time I spent on the toilet. Then you start to read up on what you're actually eating and being an animal lover it all just added up for me.

I should have added that I have also found exercise really helps me as well. High cardio if I feel I could be getting an attack coming usually see's it off.

Triggers for me are dehydration, tiredness, stress and oo much bad food. I found that eating meat and dairy also had a massive effect on me and led to me giving them up. I have been more or less Vegan since figuring that out 20 odd years ago.

Arch or Antergos (Arch with an easy installer)

It's not hard to install Arch but it takes slightly more effort than many of the mainstream distro's. The benefit is a powerful, fully customisable distro. It's documentation and package repo's are best of the best.

Antergos makes it quick (why I sometimes use it) to install and slightly easier for completely new users.

I have been on Arch based distro's for about 10 years and I wouldn't change. I have regularly reviewed other distro's but they all have things that "just work" in Arch but don't for them.

I generally use it on Thinkpad laptops and power settings and back lights (etc) all just work.

Arch or Antergos. I couldn't go back to a non rolling release OS.

Most of the time these days I use the Antergos installer and clone my dotfiles but my personal laptop (T430) still runs Arch.

I recently tried a number of distro's including Ubuntu, Fedora and Suse and while they were all great in their own way they make life too difficult. Why have more than one package manager or way to install software? Yast is still horrific. The lack of rolling release and single package manager has limited Linux on the desktop. While it's not a problem for most Linux users it has stunted everyday users.

No that's with 3 separate company's. The first 2 I was senior developer/team lead and the current company I am CTO/Director.

My current team (that I have built) is fully remote with developers in Cornwall, Scotland, Spain and India. Building a remote team has allowed me to hire the team that I want rather than picking the best of what's closest to our office. We achieve more and managing teams remotely is not hard.

Interestingly, I also find remote developers stay engaged longer and appreciate the benefits that remote working brings.

Every day give or take office visits and days out etc.

Been that way for over 10 years and wouldn't change a thing.

This smacks more of "I am married with kids, a full-time job and a severe lack of time".

If that is the case then you just need to grab time as and when you can. You will find you can find half an hour a day at least. The limited time will help you focus. I find I get up early or stay up late to make time for this.

Why on earth would MS want npm to replace what is one of the better parts of the .Net world?

I used Launchy for years but then when setting up my last day to day laptop switched to Wox (http://www.getwox.com/) after trying Hain. It was too limited at that point.

On Linux, I use Super (Windows) key to use the inbuilt launcher which meets all my requirements. If Windows had anywhere near this level of usefulness in its start menu I wouldn't need the third party Wox.

You do not have standard package manager aliases in your dot files? Why would I want to remember sudo pacman -Syu when I can just enter pkg-update?

Useful if you have to jump distro's when you surely have your commands aliased.

It's a matter of tools. All distro's are basically very similar but come with different desktops and package managers.

I spent many years jumping around Debian and its derivatives but then I found Arch and it just felt right. I love the package manager and the fact I can control what I have installed. With a 9 cell Thinkpad battery and some cleaver settings I can last all day.

I have to admit that these days I tend to run from Antergos which is a great Arch derivative but that is mainly because of a lack of time and a need to get stuff done. Also from years of installing and running standard Arch I can tweak things very quickly from Pacman.

I always look for people that are clearly very technical but who I feel I want to work with. There are some amazing developers that have zero people skills and for whom the word pragmatic doesn't exist. If you can explain complex technology in a way my CFO can understand you will also build a product for that level of user as well.

If you have that, breadth in projects and technology and you are genuinely excited by the opportunity I have on offer then I have found that a good mix.

I really like this approach. Very clear and gives the candidate a good idea of what work they will be undertaking.

I have always worked along the lines of most people here and the article. A Senior Developer is one that has amassed not only solid development experience across multiple projects but also has a solid knowledge of your product code base. Someone that can just get stuff done and leads by example. Applies best practices and is pragmatic and always add's value to the code base.

I agree that titles are handed out too easily however, developers are partly to blame here. I have held numerous titles over my career but they are meaningless. Experience is built over years for learning and applying your trade and for those that want to continue doing that where do they go after "senior"? If developer's were not so desperate for the title then this discussion and the questions being raised would be moot and we'd all be back coding.

Read only short articles that you have found during your surfing. Most articles these days only take a few mins to read and you learn while you compile!

To me the senior title should be applied depending on the way you approach your role and not how you code.

As others have mentioned as a senior you can be left to implement changes without guidance, you will clean up issues as you come across them instead of leaving it to others, you suggest improvements, you make time to mentor and guide more junior members of the team, you know how to relate to muggles and you act like a team captain.

Knowing lots of different hosting environments and languages comes with experience. The approach you take to your role show's your all rounded skill set.

That is an interesting point.

Once again I say in a start up I want experience. I want developers that can deliver with minimal management and who GTD rather than work twice as long to deliver tightly coupled, dependency riddled, fashionable code.

Also another point to your comment. If the founders are 20 or 30 something, is that why they are only hiring 20 or 30 something developers. It's their contacts in their network, previous co-workers and friends. Perhaps the issue with start ups in that not that higher percentage are started by 45-50 somethings. Hence it would be interesting to see the split of developers ages compared to the co-founders age.
