I don't the interviews are going bad... it's just super competitive so companies have so many options on who to hire

I am considering majoring in Computational Math because my primary interest is Data Science and Machine Learning.

I definently enjoy programming. From GUI development to data science, I love sitting at a computer and thinking through problems. However, I think it's only natural to be worried about job market realities.

Let's say I loved art. What use is studying art history if I can't get a job and would be living paycheck to paycheck.

For a person considering going back to school as a non-trad student for either a BS in Computer Science or Computational Math, is this a bad time to be getting a degree in CS?

I'm more of a data science wanna be than a developer, so I tend to analyze data. It's a lot of screen scraping, data munging, statistical modeling, and data visualization.

I'm always looking for data to analyze, to shoot me an email if you need something.

I'd like to get into GUI development and am working on learning that at the moment.

I'm in the KC metro area and not a developer, but looking for a statistician/analyst position. Most of my analysis is done in R and Python, though I also use SQLite, MySql, Perl, RapidMiner, and Hadoop (basic).

Regarding "I'm going to user group meetings".

I'm not a Ruby user, as I work primarily with statistical computing and machine learning, but Ruby has a really impressive set of regional user groups. Except for R, there aren't really any other languages which have a significant number of well organized regional user groups. It's great for users of a language to get together and share info and provide guidance to new users.

No, It doesn't look like Facebook will be dying off in the near future. If anything, Facebook will continue to grow if it can expand and attract users/members outside of the US and Europe.

Why go to college if you're not going to attend classes (aka being lazy), study, or attempt to get good grades?

Sure, I agree that college is over-rated and not for everyone. However, you are in college, and don't seem to be making any effort to learn or be productive. If you're going to college on taxpayer dollars or your parents money, then you are just wasting someones hard earned money. IF you stay in school, at least attend classes.

I graduated from grad school about four months ago and started working at home as a data consultant. It's important to find a comfortable space where you can still get work done. Having a nice chair to sit on is also very important.

I've never had a professional full time job, as I started working for myself straight out of grad school. I have had numerous retail jobs that I had as a teen and during college, but that's a different story. So i'm not sure about 'how to begin that arrangement.'

Why do you want to quit programming? Are you tired of sitting in front of a computer all day? or do you just dislike your current job?

I suggest answering these questions before considering any "work from home" opportunities. If it's just a matter of your current job, why not look for another employer.

1. My plan was to complete my master's in political science and then head to law school. I wasn't necessarilly interested in being a trial lawyer, but I wanted to work as a legal researcher or legal anlyst. I just lost interest as I made my way through grad school in political science.

2. I probably should not have writter 'computational scientist.' I'm basically interested in statistical computing and visualization of large data sets.
