My two cents:
1) It should attempt to detect location and display that to the user.
2) You can save locations but, these are lost on refresh.
3) No way to specify Celsius.
4) It's not a very simple service. I should be able to bookmark this and click on the link to view the weather. Instead, I need to type a location every time. Right now, I just have a bookmark to "https://www.google.com/search?q=weather".
We do it via a one-line javascript snippet.
eg: <script src="//example.com/blah/widget.js?id=xxxxxx"></script>
widget.js is a server side script that creates the widget and echo's it out. Many ways of doing this and the easiest is a bunch of document.write()'s for the html
Cap Tables aren't usually private. I don't recommend advertising it on your website but, certainly, any new investors will need/want to see it before committing.
In my opinion, a Soft Developer is one who mainly just writes code. Whereas, a Soft Engineer is somebody who looks after the project end-to-end (requirements gathering, coming up with a solution and then coding it)
Wouldn't this mean setting up a VPN on the phone and having all traffic routed through mobileadblock.com's servers?
In this day and age of NSA, privacy and spying - not sure too many users will be up for that.
Why?
I am unsure if any such pre-built solutions exist but, we have created something similar for our app.
A user can setup an unlimited number of different API Keys for their account. For each API Key, we allow them to specify:
- Name/Description: For internal reference
- High Level Permissions:
Admin: (access to make any account updates).
Read-Only: (provide read-only access to the data).
Write Only: (allows for read & write operations).
- Low Level Permissions:
Access to various end-points that can be turned on/off.
- Throttling Options
Allow the user to specify Max Read Requests p/second and max write requests p/second
If HN isn't your target demographic, the answers here are going to be really skewed. Social signup is very much preferred (we have a number of iOS & Android apps targeting consumers) and social login makes up around 82%.
Suggestion: Get rid of the Hacker News reference in your header.
I think that most people who don't know about HN will run away when they see "Hacker" in the title. You are limiting your audience. If you must, it might be best to use Reddit instead. Or maybe rotate between the names of different websites that are similar.
Honestly, I would recommend focusing more on "Community" rather than the "We are the X for Y"
Looks like it's broken. I just randomly entered some information: http://imgur.com/ZWpC6rL
$110k yearly salary + $16k income from rent. Own a $500k house with no debt. Potential for a $1m exit and 5% annual increase in salary. $600 monthly expenses and with $11k in the bank.
"You will not be able to retire. Try decreasing expenses or increasing income.".
Am I missing something?
My startup provides email marketing services. This is something we have always wanted to add into our product. We have looked at other services such as Litmus but, have not yet decided on a direction.
Some questions for you:
1) Can I white label it?
2) Do you provide an API that allows me to send you the html and you push back the screenshots or a URL to a whitelabel page
3) Your pricing page doesn't mention this: I can signup to the Unlimited Plan and then offer this as a feature (paid or free) to my users
4) Rendering time?
5) Will you be returning actual screenshots OR are you using some CSS trickery to show me how it will render theoretically.
You can type "help" to see a list of all commands.
Doesn't seem to work on FB Fan Pages. I suspect that majority of your users will be small business owners looking for a social media dashboard. I have been looking for something like this to connect all my startups social accounts into a single dashboard and it seems that i can only link my personal FB profile.
Would be good to allow you to order by position on the front page as well as total number of votes on the stories. It will allow you to see that even though github is sitting at number one as the most on the front page, they might only be averaging 4th or 5th place whereas something like BBC averages top 2 on every one of their articles.
It would be good if it faded into the next song rather than have the 1-2 sec delay while it switches to the next video.
Those charts are confusing. They appear dynamic but, it's just images.
First, make sure you have a product with traction and uses cases of it being used. Make a nice slide deck.
Make a list of investors you want to target. Look them up on LinkedIn & Angelist. See if you have any shared connections and try to get some introductions. I have found that cold emailing never really leads to anything.
Next up, join a lot of meetup groups to do with your field, startups, entrepreneurship etc... and go to as many as you can. Meet other founders. Don't just talk about yourself. Find out what they do, ask them questions, take them out for a beer etc...find out who their investors are and try and get them to do intros.
It's all about networking. Get yourself out there, meet founders and get introductions to investors.
I really like that you start the videos in the middle of the clip rather than at the very beginning.
The Feedback tab on the side of the page looks a lot like it says "Facebook".
Why is pricing based on impressions? Wouldn't it make sense for it to be based on actual feedback collected?
To be pedantic - they didn't slash their price. It's still the same. They are now just offering additional space.
Publicly shame them. That seems to send companies into overdrive to correct errors & issues.
The text should be flowing and not just random words next to each other. I should be typing sentences and not individual words.
I understand what you are after but, I don't think it exists. We looked for something very similar for use as an Email Campaign builder for our clients - ability for them use drag-and-drop to build content that would then produce the html which, we would send out.
Couldn't find anything out there and we ended up building our own. I think you will have to go down this route as well.
Take a look at the execution of Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor etc...and base it from that.
FB's recommendation engine looks at the contacts shared by their users. If they see you in a friends address book, it will recommend them to you. I think it looks at name, location, email, cell etc... to make the connections.
As well as that, even though your friend is using a different email address to the one he uses to login to FB, I bet you that FB knows your friends other email and has made the connection.
Here is a fun little game to play - Create a brand new FB account using a brand new email and your actual cell number. The list of recommendations that FB will give you are people who have your cell number in their phone's contacts application. Really cool way of knowing who has your number.
I wouldn't consider this as an example of having lost money. You built something with the intent of acquiring knowledge (Rails). It's also something that you use. I would say that it's a success based on your original goals for the project.
This link has a few examples: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7122999
This exact thing happened to me last week. I asked for a reference number and then called the bank on their official number. Quoted the reference and they transferred me to the person I was speaking with.
That's great for power users but, I could guess that the average Mac user hasn't ever typed a command into Terminal.
This was the top comment in the Dropbox Show HN thread:
"For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. From Windows or Mac, this FTP account could be accessed through built-in software"
IMHO - Google's role is to get people to spend more time online. They make their money from search...so, the more people online, the more money they make. Phones, glasses and cars are all designed around this objective. If you aren't driving a car, then that is more time that you are spending the net and thus, more money that they can make from you.
