Debian is a terrible dependency management solution for adding development dependencies to a workspace (e.g. the same sort of thing npm, cargo, and uv are used for).

As far as I can tell, pixi brings the benefits of these types of dependencies, with native support for multiple languages (python and c++ being the big ones).

ROS uses debian packages today (inside a convoluted wrapper), imo it would be much better if it went all in on pixi instead.

It’s a funny post because our team wanted to use Claude Code, but the team plan of Claude doesn’t include Claude Code (unlike the pro plan at a similar price point). Found this out after we purchased it :( We’re not going to ask every engineer to purchase it separately.

Maybe before boasting about how your internal teams use your product, add an option for external companies to pay for it!

ROS is still very heavily used in industry and is growing in absolute terms, but most of the newer frameworks and research are learning towards e2e methods.

But even if you don't use ROS, it really helps to have a working knowledge of how it approaches things like pubsub, logging + replay, transforms, etc.

Robotics is definitely getting more accessible! But keep in mind it’s a whole different world from traditional web or desktop software development, so don’t be surprised by the relatively steep learning curve. Keep at it though!

- Buy a small robot kit from Amazon or a local reseller. Yahboom make some good robot toy car kits. Hugging Face have the open source SO-ARM101 that plenty of companies manufacture and sell now. Expect to spend about $250 USD including a Jetson Nano for a good kit, up to $1000 USD if you want some more sensors

- If you can’t afford a real robot, play around with simulators like Isaac Sim and Mujoco

- Check out LeRobot, excellent framework for ML robotics from Hugging Face

- Learn the basics of ROS (pubsub), even if you don’t end up using it, a lot of the industry jargon and design patterns come from ROS so it helps to understand it. Think of ROS like Ruby on Rails, it’s a heavyweight batteries-included framework with lots of opinions.

- ROS does have some nice libraries for manipulation (MoveIt) and navigation (Nav2) using more classical (non-ML) methods

- Leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT and Cursor when you get stuck, it’s a lot faster than Googling when you’re just getting started and don’t even know the right term to search for.

I run a robotics dev tools company and we work closely with companies of all sizes across the robotics industry, so have a unique perspective on this.

I would say about half of the industry (read: for-profit robotics startups from early stages through to 10,000s of robots in production) uses ROS, and of those probably 2/3 are on ROS 2 at this point, and the rest are in some stage of migration. ROS 2 solved a lot of problems that didn't need solving, but like it or not ROS 1 is abandonware at this point so almost no one is planning to stick with ROS 1 longer than they have to.

Most companies aren't maintaining their own fork of ROS (other than to submit patches upstream), but a small number of companies on ROS 1 forked it and diverged so significantly that there is no point trying to rebase on ROS 2 - of these GM Cruise was the most notable, although the future of their stack is unknown now that GM canceled the robotaxi project.

The other half of the industry uses some sort of in-house stack built from parts (compare batteries-included frameworks like rails/django to building a backend using libraries like expressjs and sequelize). There is usually some form of pub/sub messaging architecture, because pub/sub is a natural fit for robotics and makes it easier to log and replay/resimulate. Some common things I see are zeromq, vanilla DDS (no ROS), zenoh, or write their own pub/sub (sometimes using shared memory). The messages themselves are often protobuf, flatbuffer, cbor, json, or sometimes just raw c structs.

Building your own stack isn't hard, but its much easier if you have used ROS before and know which concepts you want to reuse, rather than reinventing everything from first principles.

Some newer robotics frameworks are also starting to spring up which is great to see, for example https://github.com/copper-project/copper-rs and https://github.com/dora-rs/dora

There are also frameworks more specifically targeted towards robot learning, for example https://github.com/huggingface/lerobot

If people are just starting out in robotics, or just starting a robotics company, I still recommend ROS despite its warts, it is worth learning because it has had such a big influence on the current ecosystem. There is no "right answer" though, many companies have been successful with each approach.
