If insurance companies add ethics clauses to contracts that refer to this, suddenly it’s very enforceable.

“If we build that we’ll need an insurance waiver.”

“We won’t be able to get cyber insurance if we do that.”

Etc.

Starting a small company doing a niche product, while easier said than done, provides significant benefits in recapturing your own time.

When the baby won’t let you sleep you can have productive time without it feeling forced, you can take days off when needed, take naps in the middle of the day, etc.

It’s a different kind of stress that can feel healthier.

Also, regular hard exercise and/or martial arts training, particularly BJJ, is de riguer for stress management.

When you get into YC one of the first things they tell you is to develop a regular physical health practice because startups are incredibly difficult.

Safely blow the burnout into the weights and your sparring partners.

I have set extremely clear boundaries on my time and enforced them religiously. This has caused massive problems, including potentially destroying my company. I have simply accepted those problems as the cost of reading my son bedtime stories.

The overtime culture in startups is toxic, because efficient output is u-shaped over time: if you work too hard your productivity goes down. It requires very mature self reflection to know that slowing down will actually speed up the work.

tldr, boundaries boundaries boundaries. Maturity.

Yesterday the NYSE had a technical issue in its price bounds checking system that caused it to revert approx. 4,341 trades in 251 symbols. The root cause was determined to be a manual error involving the Exchange’s Disaster Recovery configuration at system start of day.

Christmas is celebrated as Christ’s birthday because 8 days later is New Year’s. This was set so that each year starts with a spiritual circumcision to consecrate it in Jewish law, and to “embrace and extend” existing pagan festivals. This is not a tautology.

The typical response (for example, I've seen Patio11 say this) is: don't make your life harder than necessary by including big life changes in your startup journey. Running a company is hard, do it the easy way.

That said, I did this with the love and support of my wife -- she wanted (and wants) to help me Live The Dream (tm). We got married, bought property, and had a kid while she worked full time and I started my company.

Even with her support it's been brutally difficult. My entire life runs on hard mode.

I recommend thinking less about maintaining a standard of living and more about acceptable tradeoffs.

A perfectly acceptable tradeoff to most people is to NOT start a company. If closing that door causes you grief, my condolences -- you'll have to do it the hard way too.

And: side hustles are, IMO, procrastination traps. They're a linear attempt to solve an exponential problem. Work will feel like progress but actual traction is hard, family life will always be a pleasant distraction, and investors will rarely take you seriously (it's literally the first question most investors ask newbies).

Fun question to reflect on answering! It's all about teamwork! I'm defining "impact" as user count:

About 8 years ago I built (as tech lead) a very simple commenting system that is seen by about a million people a day with several thousand DAUs.

I also made a triple-A cricket video game that was huge in India (batsman and umpire AI, some physics).

Made (as enterprise architect) a mobile banking app for a bank with several million customers.

Post is about taking short breaks between video meetings, and can confirm.

When we did YC the partners told us that regular physical exercise was extremely important. For me, regularly lifting heavy weights prevents extreme stress from corroding my mind.

tldr; switch your drink to soda and citrus.

Regarding "hating yourself when you fail" -- a growth mindset helps with this kind of negative thought pattern, generally. You are making incremental, iterative progress not flipping a binary switch.

One thing that was a big help, in my experience, was noticing that I liked carbonization and conversation, not ethanol. I switched to soda and citrus. I've also heard good things about CBD beverages if your jurisdiction allows.

Echoing some of the other posters here: Clojure is fantastic, hiring (several) Clojure developers is hard.

Conversely, you can also get to the end of your roadmap quickly (Clojure being great) and end up overstaffed.

There's a different line to walk with languages like Clojure.

Source: I walked this line.

Congratulations! Sounds like a stressful situation. In my opinion:

It sounds like you need a break and need a bit of a mental adjustment: you've likely spent a decade being undervalued (new hires almost always make more than long-serving employees).

Take what pat leave you can, max out vacation time, and sick days if you need to, decompress, and adjust to being a dad.

As soon as you feel ready, talk to management / owners and express these feelings. You'll get good feedback either way. Your goal is either to take a sabbatical and come back refreshed, with a raise, or take your notice period to find a new job.

Maybe it's time to move into management or shift into something slower, like government. Maybe it's time to move nearer to family -- grandpa and grandma might enjoy helping with childcare.

Calm down, face your fears, and change what you need to change in order to take care of your responsibilities.

Best of luck!
