There's a great book on motivation that splits this differently:

1) realizing/seeing the impact of your work on real human beings

2) having objective metrics that you are influencing

3) being part of a team that treats you like a human and cares about you

The book is called "The Truth about Employee Engagement" by Patrick Lencioni

I studied Chinese for 2 years, and I've been searching for something like this for a while. However I think that this novel (Ah Q) is too difficult for a beginner.

I installed the "Zhongwen Chinese Popup Dictionary" extension for Chrome. It kind of works -- as you hover over characters it shows the definition. But I don't have any good content! I can't find any good beginner level Chinese stories online!

Top tech companies end up paying more for H1-B engineers than US engineers. Not only that but they have to pay for legal fees and wait for the legal process to take place. Why would they go through this if there were good US candidates available? Also tech salaries for entry level engineers at top tech companies (Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox etc.) have increased by about 50% in the last 4 years.

Over the past few years I have seen starting salaries at top tech companies (Google, Dropbox, Twitter) increase by huge amounts. This may not be true at all companies, but it is definitely true at top companies. I also know that these companies will hire anyone who can pass their interviews.

I feel like many times the argument is that preventing high-skilled workers from staying in the US will help US citizens. This assumes that there's a fixed pie of jobs and that basically bringing talent from outside will burden the US economy. I definitely don't think that's true.

It also assumes that top tech companies have no option but to hire people in the US. I have many friends who had trouble with getting a visa and instead went to work in Canada for Google. This basically means the US lost one job, plus the taxes and economic stimulus that a high paid worker would bring in.
