How Should a White House Quora Work?

I came to this exact conclusion a long time ago, except using intermittent fasting (i.e. “stop eating so much”):

    1. Use a fad diet (e.g. potato) to get down to 80 kg.

    2. Weigh yourself every morning

    3. If your average weight over a week ever exceeds 81 kg, spend the next week on the potato diet.

    4. Repeat forever.

Loved that book! I highly recommend it.

That said, nothing will prepare you for the reality. It’s like learning to swim in a lap pool, then getting dropped into the ocean in the middle of a storm.

Just learn as much as you can, talk to as many people as you can, and prepare yourself for the fact that you will not be prepared.

All good! Other than that, there’s nothing like a child saying “I love you too.” So, it’s all worth it once you get to it.

Congrats!

I wouldn't feel bad...those (phoneme, plosive, fricative, spirant, and affricate) are specialized vocabulary words from a specific domain (linguistics). I only know them because I have an interest in the topic. Other than phoneme, they describe how words are pronounced and/or formed in the mouth.

The tldr food list:

* high sodium (66 508 deaths in 2012; 9.5% of all cardiometabolic deaths)

* low nuts/seeds (59 374; 8.5%)

* high processed meats (57 766; 8.2%)

* low seafood omega-3 fats (54 626; 7.8%)

* low vegetables (53 410; 7.6%)

* low fruits (52 547; 7.5%)

* high sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) (51 694; 7.4%)

You state facts, here are some additional ones from the article:

* “people who simply dieted experienced greater weight loss than those who combined diet and exercise.”

* “You would have to walk for more than 45 minutes to burn off the 300 calories from eating just three cookies.”

* “researchers concluded, “active, ‘traditional’ lifestyles may not protect against obesity if diets change to promote increased caloric consumption.”

* “It’s calorie intake that is really fueling the obesity epidemic.”

Personally, the most weight I’ve ever lost was over a six month period of zero exercise, but with a restricted diet. (Consequences of a work assignment out of town.)

My most physically active periods (3-4 hours daily in the ocean) have been accompanied by no weight loss, sometimes even weight gain.

Of all the criticisms of the Windows platform I recall, I don't remember anyone complaining it was "closed system".

In fact, the opposite problem made it a haven for malware and viruses.

Headline: "Apple Avoided Billions in Taxes"

Fact: "Investigators have not accused Apple of breaking any laws, and the company is hardly the only American multinational to face scrutiny for using complex corporate structures and tax havens to sidestep taxes."

NY Times going for another Pulitzer.

You make a point about general computer literacy, but it misses the point of the article.

OP is specifically addressing the fact that employers are trying to increase the supply of actual programmers by encouraging more people to learn to program, not just learn the difference between on or off states.

It’s a non-altruistic push to increase the supply of something that is in high demand.

“politically charged statements like this can do a good deal of damage, so I’ve been wary about sharing my views more publicly”

It’s not that the statement is politically charged, it’s just wrong.

I have cousins that work at help desks in the Philippines, and their work schedules are designed to match US time zones. After work, they hang out at bars with happy hours designed for them - I believe around ten in the morning. They hang out, then go home to sleep for the rest of the day.

Globalisation at work.

"we believe that several important inaccuracies and misleading information remained in the story that was published on January 26."

"The narrative you present is an inaccurate picture of the work we have done with Apple, of the role Apple played in the worker hotline project, and of BSR’s views of Apple."
