There need to be more companies solving this from first principles like Yuzu Health.
They have a cool blog at https://yuzu.health/blog that gets into the dynamics of this stuff. Legacy insurance is cooked.

We love hiring junior engineers at https://yuzu.health/careers.
Please apply or reach out to me over email: russell@yuzu.health.
Insurance is truly the place to find information challenges. It’s abstract but hypothetically structured well.
Seems like there are a lot of use cases for this.
I had no idea the concept of product market fit was so new
This happens with healthcare data too. Every prescription you fill is tracked and used as input data for many insurance models that make health insurance pricing decisions.
Yuzu Health. NYC.
We are: Health insurance plan manager growing 10%+ m/o/m with a founding team of just 5 people. We are using technology to link together new incentive structures that work better than the traditional health insurance model to power employer sponsored plans.
Looking for: A full-stack builder, in person only. Someone who loves to build and wants to ship every day. Our technical challenges include complex data structures, interfaces, and integrations related to the financial layer of healthcare.
We believe that if we can abstract away the surprising complexity of running a health insurance plan then we can make health insurance more transparent and affordable.
I’ll admit that my company posts jobs to show strength to customers, partners, and competitors despite not actively hiring.
My rationale is that if people actually cared enough to reach out to me personally (we are tiny startup) I would respond honestly.
And yes, if the perfect person came around I would hire them on the spot.
I thought this was about Yuzu Health
You should owe the money to the school. Will align incentives. If graduates don’t make enough to pay back the debt then the school could become insolvent. As it should.
Have foods gotten more processed in the last two decades?
My understanding is that there has been a movement away from hyper processed food, but still a huge uptick in allergies.
The hygiene thesis and antibiotic thesis seem true to me, but I am not sure that processed foods are that determining.
People want to be affirmed and loved. The medical system cannot do this.
The healthcare industry will always try to sell a product, celebrate a cure. If not for profit, individual doctors will just do this for a sense of self-worth.
Matplotlib is great
Dark matter almost certainly doesn’t exist.
This hunt for it is very parallel to the hunt for the “ether” that Einstein showed didn’t exist. Curiously, the big insight of relativity was getting rid of two bad assumptions: the concept of “simultaneity” and the idea that gravitational acceleration is locally different from other acceleration.
I think the resolution to whatever dark matter is will likely make other fundamental problems in physics simpler as well.
I don’t brush my teeth because I don’t want the residual fluoride there.
It’s healthier to just slosh some vodka around to kill the germs (this wouldn’t work with kids, but hey they’ll lose their first teeth so who cares).
If you read the financial plans of these direct primary care clinics you’ll see that they intentionally lose money on primary care with the strategy of making up for it in increased referrals business.
Healthcare is so greedy. Thanks for sharing this.
This is my favorite complexity paper. It reminds us of how much we don’t know.
This is why climate accounting startups are dumb. Soon, very soon, clean energy and electric cars will literally be cheaper. Why track carbon credits anymore?
Yuzu Health (yuzu.health/careers) is hiring full stack developers to work with us in NYC to help refactor healthcare from our position of being the payer (health plan administrator).
We are building the default health plan for startups (Brex or stripe, but health insurance).
Seeking individuals with courage to be founding team members with significant equity.
Wow I am exactly the opposite. I do not like hacking. I like designing and optimizing and experimenting with new languages and strategies.
I have mad respect for people like you, and always wished I was able to think in your way better. You should find a startup that has an engineering team that will complement (not mirror) your skills.
The best theory I have heard for why crypto is so popular besides gambling is that it is fun to think about. True engineers love working in crypto since it feels cutting edge and is more advanced than other technologies.
This might continue even after pump and dump, but will no longer be lucrative.
All this and AirBnB pays its engineers so well. Crazy to me. Feels like they should hire better engineers for the $ and build solutions that are more transparent and consistently adjuducated.
Also comments about email/phone number change cutting people out of AirBnB— same story. This is a feature I could imagine a single engineer building and testing in a summer internship. Yet still horrible guest experience.
Would brainstorm with pen and paper only. Publishing thoughts and brainstorms to friends is the only thing I would use a tool online for
Really wanna try Vienna. Been on their waitlist
This is the most hacker news article I’ve ever seen
There are collaborative editing options for paper pencil coding too but really you should just bite the bullet and use vscode. Emacs is not a personality trait, might be time to drop it and move on.
Strongly disagree. I’ve worked at two startups and found them to have been really educational jobs.
Despite being a recent grad, I was given huge responsibilities and with that huge mentorship (founders couldn’t afford for me to mess up). I think founders are generally smarter than middle managers at big companies, so I think that at least in theory they’d be better mentors.
Only the competent and hardworking keep their jobs/move up at a startup. If you’re someone who wants to work with the best, this is a good thing.
The harder not smarter thing is something this essay might be close to right about. Sometimes there is not time to think deeply about problems.
But…to say startup experience is writing CRUD a bunch is false. Good startups generally use cutting edge tech—no legacy systems and less maintenance and migration pains.
