First, clinics in US were closed, then transport companies (specialised drug-delivery planes with freezers), at this point we knew that cancer patients will be 3rd class patients and will eventually die without treatment, likely in pain. Patients weren't allowed in to clinics to prevent them getting covid, as they were high risk (as in health and financially, for the research).

Next week the company lost financial support, 100 devs and 70 testers were made redundant. Investors and board members handled redundancy particularly bad, burnt bridges with employees who were there for the mission. Pretty much all moved to fin-tech. No one I keep contact with is thinking about getting there back with our unique knowledge of the product and industry.

Not only say that. It has happened to me. I bought 3 doors wardrobe with 2 mirror doors. 2 years later I was moving to a different accommodation, wardrobe fall apart when we were holding it above stairs. Only mirror doors were reusable. The rest filled full container for garbage.

I'm all for buy-for-life, so I bought only oak-made furniture since then. I still visit IKEA quite often, but just for plants and clearance section where you can find sheepskin, natural carpets and IoT lights for 1/3 of price. They also have really good hot chocolate and cakes :D

I'm on similar position as you, but I say systems are as complex as their designed made them and it's on you to change it.

My solution was to change the checks into single methods and move one god-decision-making-method into classes that are components with their own logic.

As far as our manual testing goes, there was no bug in it. But also there were no tests for it. Writing tests for it is horrible. You need to prepare test for each switch/case branch and it adds a lot of mocking, faking data, setting up variables...

FUCK, you might think it's funny, but I literally work with one senior developer (10+ years experience in pure Java). He write code like that, during review insists this is OK because he's been writing such code for over a decade! I inherited this project after he moved to another country and is not legally to work remotely for company in the UK. He has permissions to override jenkins+sonarqube, so he merges code without test coverage. His code has literally 0 tests. Only today I was rewriting code like:
