Yeah, I just assume that today's 23-year-olds (or 13-year-olds) should all know this, and had the same experience as me, using notepad.exe to alter/test some html, which was grabbed from a "CD-ROM", that came with a "magazine", with something like "Netscape 1.0" (for Win 3.1) on it, in late 1994! All bitcoin has done so far is make the people with as little as $50 to spare (in 2011, 2012) into rich people. The rest of us in recession hit Europe have merely been screwed by it. I'm not saying it will crash or won't, but it's promoted more inequality than most other instruments.
and saying "the value of the bitcoin economy is $5bn" or whatever is disingenuous. Economies are measured by the FLOW of money - the gdp, not the STOCK - the total value of the money supply in a different currency. The amount of money changing hands is what matters - and afaik, that's miniscule in comparison.
Yes. Usability fail. OS X often has no scrollbars. Unity has none? My mouse has no horiz-scoll. Wed designers stop doing this. We aren't all using tablets!
Wow:
Spam Filter Not Triggered By Typing "Nigger" 85 Times.
Some new gold standard for shittyness in software. I know a lot of Googleplexizens moved to Fb and Apple, but, huh????
I feel like my personal site should reject all current web design practice and just have Times with the occasional {h1} black on #ccc with #00f links. You'll never come up to the standard people expect in this world of ajax, tumblr and css3, so why not just do it CERN and Netscape style?
Dark green on yellow is actually the easiest to read, but that's garish.
So, and I'm not advocating it, as long as you legalise or conceal the source of the money invested, you can hold money and earn any [capital appreciation against your currency] without your government tax authority knowing that you even have this capital. As long as you divest it when you have changed jurisdiction to somewhere you are willing to pay tax (eg. 0%) on this "income" or wealth you are tax-free? Same as offshore banking with no remittances to your home accounts?
What's wrong with that word. Women I know use it all the time. They don't mind being the subject of a transitive verb instead of the actor. One conquers them because they have huge ... tracts of land.
also because people, not just men, who become leaders are psychopaths, so any damage they do is just a fun bonus, not something they'll sweat, a nice addition to the money, sex and power they get. And yes, sex too - power turns women on and powerful women turn men on too. e.g. I don't really consider JFK a rapist - he just never had to ask... any of his hundreds of conquests.
Homer Simpson : ...before the weight of the world broke my spirit.
Seems to have happened to me too. If it were possible to disable my conscience I would probably opt for it. Where's Dick Fuld now, eh?? Employed.
I don't understand. Does the article say that changing your ip is wrong and precedent-setting as such. Has Aaron, with all respect to him, left us ironically with the tyranny of true names? Legal precedent nationally across the US?
"The SSL alarm is down, back up the redundant firewall so we can override the EXE bus!" Nonsense. but the idea of SSL alarms would be good.
Yes, the package as is will not route the bittorent traffic over tor, but since this is for people who don't even know how to use proxies, some of them will probably start configuring their torrent clients to use the same proxies.
since "the killjoys" (actually quite accurate in this case) AT WIKIPEDIA won't let me put the words 'LUDICROUS SPEED' in blink tags or capitals on the Spaceballs article, what's the point in having it anyway?
Rather than rant.
!Just search twitter for 'operation IGNORE Assange' which I have been running since he went in there!
Isn't this now, like, the Duke Nukem Forever of Mac text editors?
Big mistake in the first para. This is what happens when MSM covers tech. Tor and the discretion of the sellers makes Silk Road EFFECTIVELY anon, not bitcoin per se. The sellers have your postal address and your bitcoin data.
The police have ALWAYS been given the tools to do this kind of thing by the courts and parliament. (in all of Europe, at least.) There are loads of offences still on the books that could mean almost anything, but which can be used as grounds for arrest. The police have ALWAYS used their 48 hours of custody to remove certain troublemakers from certain areas under every type of government. Taking away your ability to shout in the streets for 48 hours is not MUCH of a restriction on freedom of speech. Get a blog and millions can read it, but nobody will. Most people don't have time for politics, and the majority won't until resources are no longer scarce.
People, if you support Pres. Obama you have to go along with statism because he is one. Supporting him because he is the "least worst" even though you hate any statism is stupid. If you don't like a big government, support someone else.
If they can only do 9000 out of 62 million, that's impressive, and not at all a too large number. Why is it suddenly news when the police (who are subject to full government oversight) do this, but not when MI5 do it, who aren't? Didn't everyone know that MI5/6 do this kind of thing. Yes they did. It moved from the Scargills/Marxists to only the IRA in the 90s, then onto the Islamists almost exclusively, but what a non story.
This should be read as an indictment of what the site has become, not just an example of it.
"Where's the petition to NOT pardon him!!"
I will do it. I will ragequit. This site is turning into a libertarian silicon valley version of freerepublic.
When you've found civilisation, America, in 1000 years or so you'll realise that autoritarianism works and that's why you've got it.
If we had a fascist government, everyone would be in prison except me. I'm sick of the police failing to do their job because they don't know that it IS: to provide a level playing field, that I can see, so I have no need or temptation to cheat in the first place. As an average HN reader, you know this is correct. Ever been pulled over for speeding on a road where everyone else gets away with worse? Until the state STOPS the bad guys having all the fun, you, the state, down to every beat cop, haven't done this. More government now. Much much much much more. Make 50% of the population into prison officers and cops if necessary. There'll be zero unemployment.
Well whaddya know. The great recession has caused Europeans to return to fascism. Way to go Dick Fuld(!)
@pg : either ban all politics from the site or deal with the fires of hell that start in 5 4 3 2 1
Hi there NSA readers, keep it up.
Supply and demand. The system is pricing their labour as if they are fungible, so numerous that they are worthless. Because they are that numerous. But you can't tell people not to breed without taking away their rights. Really, was a "right" to reproduce a good idea? You can't talk about overpopulation without being called an ecofascist.
So I suppose it's good that goods won't be scarce much longer and will all be made with printers, robots, nano-assemblers.
I assume that eventually people's families will be rich enough to sue over employee deaths?
China makes few lines of products that are luxuries. It makes many that are necessities at almost any price. I need them. If people don't have enough money to buy more expensively and carefully made things, it's because governments have let inequality go too far and because the 1% have hoarded it.
Are there resolvers that block all of it instead of known bad sites? Can you do anything on your own OS or browser to block it? Can someone make a browser extension to do this?
A European and multi-lingual version of facebook that doesn't enforce American puritanism rules on porn etc and torrents, would be more popular, like tumblr.
Swearing in a language other than your first counts a lot less. As if were to throw "merde" or "fick" around. In Sweden, while speaking Swedish, they will casually say fuck instead of "fan!" or "helvete!"
Yes, that'd be lovely. No more talking about lbs and such. (I'm British but we were not taught imperial measures.)
But they'd still be saying things like
* "Where's Chechnya?" (if under 15 in 1995 you have an excuse)
* "I love being in England", when they're standing in "Glassgau" (Glasgow=Glazgo) - try it. Brave!
* "different than", "gotten", "color"...
The point that's up for debate is: Are maimings and killings that are designed to change US govt policy more important than other maimings and killings. I think the answer is yes.
I agree that we don't know yet if that was the aim here. I also would agree that the level of terrorist attacks the west is subject to are too small to make us change any policy at all in the way the terrorists wish.
When the Met(ropolitan Police) or Gendarmerie Nationale or Carabinieri raid a property, the terrorists they are looking for have only household improvised weapons. Every European is today, once again glibly pointing this out (touché). When they are in the US, given the behaviour [le mot juste] of congress today, is it surprising that they can and so will shoot back? Of course they will. It is inexplicable and totally bizarre to the rest of the world that they are lethally "armed and dangerous" because they ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO BE.
"We don't care that the world things we are all immovably, constitutionally crazy" is such a weird position. You seem not to. One nation demonstrably under the NRA.
Americans seem to actually think that these weekly gun massacres happen everywhere else too. They just don't.
It is now absolutely clear that you can kill hundreds in a day with a few of your own guns, and the federal government will spring into not the tiniest bit of action.
as a general rule, avoid the word favorites altogether in any software, unless you are certain it will only be used in the US. We spell it favourites, and "favvOrrittez" as you seem to spell it, really grates. Esp in IE, whereas Net/moz always called them bookmarks. Fayvritz.
Yes, but Danes are quite prepared to pay 25% VAT and up to 62% income tax so that among many other things, The (evil statist) State can afford to buy hugely expensive turbines from Siemens just to avoid giving money to Arabs. And those loaded Norwegians.
Americans, apparrently, while in huge numbers, in thrall to Rand/Objectivism and the Kochs, are not.
Well since the wind is due in large part to the rotational inertia of the the planet (the air stays still, the earth and everything on the surface moves through the air) the earth's rotational kinetic energy is being sapped. It can't last. Peak spinnage! Tell the people! (...some will say)
I'm English. I live in Denmark. Yes, on this, we win: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/...
