It won't. Amazon kind of when that angle with MistralLite[1] (a 7B finetune), and it was barely passing in terms of being an effective summarizer. 0.5B are pretty much useless.

Just a few weeks ago I spoke to someone who shelled out $10k for running LLM's locally. I've seen more expensive builds as well.

One of the problems here is that we're essentially chasing the tail on toxic chemicals.

When one chemical gets banned, it gets replaced by a slightly different form of the same chemical. When Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was banned due to its toxicity, it was replaced by other phthalate compounds like Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) or Di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP).

We then spend years researching the next revision, only to find out it's toxic as well, leading to another ban or regulation and the cycle continuing.

Instead of maintaining a blacklist of banned chemicals, maybe we should have a whitelist of chemicals that are allowed to be imported/present in products. The situation is complex though because it's difficult to enforce.

I like toying around with local AI models. I do so a lot actually. But the AI gold rush is starting to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

It's astonishing how quickly this technology went from "new" to being used by profiteers trying to milk it for every last dollar. I can't even remember how many new projects/websites I come across on a daily basis, which are mostly just a wrapper for ChatGPT with custom prompt. Not to mention what the bigger companies are doing, as stated in OP's article.

The irony is that even the "Wild West" of cryptocurrency (I know) had a brief, innocent era where enthusiasts drove innovation for the sake of innovation, not just profit. That guy that bought pizza with bitcoin for example, it was fun and kinda cool.

AI however, went from something most people had never heard of to full-speed exploitation. It's as if greed just keeps getting worse in this world. Everything is a potential source of income now. Apologies for the rant...

I think one of the problems is that they'll just ban the apps from the app stores if they don't comply. Including Matrix clients.

Tech savvy people might be able to compile/sideload/apk download (etc.) their way around it.

But it's very difficult to get friends that you're talking with to do the same, when they don't care or don't know how to.

So all your data will just be scanned on your friend's side.
