1. People *across generations* had to skill up. 2. software being very opaque (very differently from agriculture/mechanized labour) imo is linked to having a plethora of support roles that cannot write software but "handle the human part" and help make it readable, while spreading accountability. Hopefully with a "more readable/more standardized" software development, those [product|project|people] management roles can stop being a drag/bottleneck. (code was never the bottleneck we repeat ourselves since age immemorial)

here is your scapegoat. no lesson learnt. another round please.
all good, but why `5. install twitter`? > it's a huge time sink but everything happens there in the open.
... ok? i don't get why the tradeoff is worth it?
You don't keep violent and intelligent animal as pets, you keep them in cages at the zoo.
yeah for headphones, I also feel the same. But for food and coffee, I really cannot go back to lower standards. It feels like I put myself in a trap with this attitude. I have not found a way out yet.
Tell me more! I need to hear this! I'm fed up with being a critic. It feels like a trap I set myself into without realizing. I'm at the point where I can only enjoy coffee brew at home with expensive toys and I'm becoming miserable about it: Id prefer the freedom to have anything anywhere while being able to enjoy. Applies to coffee but also other things. So yeah, pls tell us more.
yeah sometimes it can be that. but most of the time it's difficult to step back once you raise the bar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedonic_treadmill and all that
with "dev wanting X" nothing happens. "leadership deciding X" then it needs to get done.
But the only recourse for an IC under a bad manager is to quit or find another team to work on.
Agree but nothing easy about that.
noice
I think I would like to be able to answer the following two questions:
1. what percentage of this object price is net profit? 2. is that percentage a "fair" proportion?
but atm, I don't have a "scientific" way to respond to those questions so I usually go with my gut, or do whatever other people in my circle do (which is not ideal and I'd like to change)
Hey, I completely agree and I also suffer from this same bias: it's ruining me from enjoying stuff that I would like to buy but in the end I just give up because it feels that any profit is a scam. What kind of resource can I study for me to understand and accept other people making profits?
sold for whatever you want. Supposing the other party wants BTC (wild assumption) and you want 1Mton of lead, I guess the exchange would happen.
welcome to the real world where no one does a good job and everyone is more or less impacted.
Thanks for writing this. It makes me question if I'm too much concerned with code hygiene vs my coworkers.
Why Meta decided to open source their Llama architecture and complete models? From a strategic business perspective, I'm trying to puzzle why they would give that up, a competitive advantage (even though it might not be as good as OpenAI product), rather than directly competing with OpenAI. What's the reasoning behind this decision?
LOL
smart fridge anyone?
I hope so, even though I don't think I'll ever feel the need to perish on that hill, just to check if it's actually true.
Here's my signature.
hey i'd want tips if you want to share. i'm remote since before covid. i've moved company months ago, but i don't have great ideas on how to "satisfy interaction" professionally.
I disagree. it sometimes gives me that feeling as well even though I like the guy and his blog. i don't know if it's a cultural thing. i'm no native english storage
You sound right.
And that makes it even more depressing.
mail to new manager with its boss in CC and its boss's boss and HR(?)
hey i've noticed i got signed up to systemX rota without any notice or agreement on my part.
1. I don't want to. please remove me. 2. it's a part of the system that i've never contributed on and don't have any visibility.
or mail to your boss (with new manager in copy?)
hi, i've noticed that newman signed me up for systemX rota, which i don't have any visibility or knowledge of that system. could you get me removed from there?
I don't see the added value compared to virtual-study-hall that uni runs https://www.ucalgary.ca/live-uc-ucalgary-site/sites/default/... and random strangers on different free website/platforms.
Hashes can be of any file.
How long will it take before your hard drives are scanned for matching hashes of copyrighted material?
but I'm still really happy I grew up in those.
Of course you should be happy and grateful.
Being born in any circustance is not something anybody can decide. It's even worse when people feel bad about having born in or having good circustamces.
on us as developers for creating a culture that encourages constant company hopping
lol. It's not like _us developers_ like the stress of interviewing every 2years. It's just that we know that we're undervalued and underpaid and have the luxury to prepare for job hopping. It's a matter of _fair_ talent retention, not of _developer encouraging a culture of company hopping_ (???). Or give me example to change my mind, maybe I've not understood what you meant by that.
Because the compensation raise doesn't stay synched to the market.
Yeah, not at all easy though. Spent two days at work and didn't managed to get it done.
Is Play Framework still used/developed? Haven't seen any progress from performance in the last years. Happy to get corrected, though.
What would you have used in this case?
